October baseball has its 12 teams. On Sunday, September 27, with the regular season essentially wrapped up, the 2026 MLB postseason bracket was finalized — and FOX Sports made it official on social media. From here on out, it’s pure elimination baseball: one bad series and you’re watching the rest of October from your couch.
How the MLB Playoff Bracket Works
The MLB postseason runs three rounds before the World Series:
- Wild Card Round: Best-of-three series. Three AL teams and three NL teams battle it out, with the higher seed hosting. One loss doesn’t end you — but two does. There’s almost no margin for error.
- Division Series (LDS): The six Wild Card survivors face the three division winners in each league in a best-of-five.
- Championship Series (LCS): Best-of-seven, with a World Series berth on the line.
- World Series: Best-of-seven. One champion standing.
Twelve teams enter. One wins it all. Unlike most other sports, there are no second chances within a round — lose the series, go home.
Why the Wild Card Round Is the Cruelest Part of the Bracket
The current 12-team, three-wild-card-per-league format has been in place since 2022, and it fundamentally changed October baseball. Even a division winner can get bounced early if the rotation isn’t lined up right. The Wild Card Round is where the bracket is at its most ruthless: in a three-game series, the gap between an 88-win team and a 95-win team can come down to a single hitter on a bad afternoon.
Regular-season numbers — AVG, ERA, OPS — still matter, but a short series can unravel any contender if the ace isn’t sharp or the lineup runs into a scorching reliever. MLB history is full of 100-win teams that didn’t make it past the first round.
For the Latin players in this bracket — including Venezuelan, Dominican, and Mexican prospects reaching their first postseason — October is where legacies are built. Or shattered. There’s no in-between in playoff baseball.
What’s Next: Dates and How to Follow the Bracket
The Wild Card Round opens in the first days of October. Full schedules are available on MLB.com, with games airing on FOX Sports across Latin America. The complete bracket — matchups and home sites — was shared by @MLBONFOX on Sunday, September 27.
What’s already clear: every team in the field knows exactly where they’re playing and who they’re playing. Seeding determines home-field advantage in the Wild Card, and in a three-game series, that detail can be the difference between advancing and packing bags before the week is out.
The bracket is set. October starts now.
