Aaron Judge Played Catch for the First Time — How Close Is He to Coming Back?

Aaron Judge played catch on Friday, August 14 in New York — the first time the Yankees captain has taken part in any real baseball activity since a stress fracture in his right first rib took him out of the lineup on May 31. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed the news before Saturday’s game in Toronto and was direct about it: this is the beginning of the process, not a return announcement. In the meantime, New York is sitting at 32-31 without its best player — a mediocre stretch that makes every day on the calendar feel more urgent.

A catch, not a miracle: what Boone actually said

Boone spoke before Saturday’s game at Rogers Centre and put the moment in perspective. According to coverage from ESPN and MLB.com, he described the throwing session as part of the «ramp-up» toward baseball activities, adding that the team is still in the «early stages of baseball activity» with Judge. No return date has been set.

The injury history here is longer and messier than it looks. Judge believes he suffered the fracture on April 26 during a diving attempt in Houston — though that’s his own account, not a medical determination of the exact origin. He may have aggravated it on May 3 when he collided with the wall in a game against Baltimore. He played through all of May with the fractured rib before landing on the injured list on June 5, then being transferred to the 60-day IL on July 18. The official stress fracture diagnosis came on June 5, after the team had initially feared thoracic outlet syndrome — a condition that could have carried far more serious consequences.

On August 5, after new imaging showed enough healing, the Yankees cleared Judge for light physical activity: outdoor running and upper-body resistance training. The August 14 catch session is the first real step toward baseball. Unofficial projections point to September as a realistic return window, which would let him join the final stretch of the regular season and, if the team qualifies, the postseason.

32-31: what it costs the team every day without him

When Judge left the lineup on May 31, the Yankees lost more than a bat — they lost the engine of their offense. A 32-31 record in 63 games without him is the mark of a team that competes, not one that dominates. For a franchise with postseason expectations, every game in that .500 range stings.

The roster picture makes things more complicated. Cody Bellinger (hamstring, on the IL since late July) and Giancarlo Stanton are also in rehab. The Yankees are waiting on three key players to return at the same time, with the season clock running.

In the 34 games Judge played in 2026 before the injury, he hit .248 with 17 home runs, 38 RBI and an .908 OPS. Numbers that might look ordinary for a star in another context — until you look at what Statcast says underneath them.

Why you can’t rush this recovery

A stress fracture in the first rib isn’t a muscle issue you can push through with hard work. The bone has to heal enough before someone with Judge’s size and swing violence can resume the rotational movements of hitting, throwing and fielding. Sports medicine experts cited in specialized outlets are clear: there’s no shortcut.

The catch on Friday was the first proof that the process is moving in the right direction. But between throwing lightly in an empty bullpen in New York and squaring up 98 mph fastballs in September, there are a lot of steps in between: tee work, live BP, fielding, simulated games. Boone didn’t set a date because he can’t set one yet. What is known is that Judge responded well to the throwing session, according to AP on August 15 citing Boone directly. That’s a good sign. It’s not a return — but it’s the first one in a long time.

The numbers behind the urgency

Aaron Judge doesn’t show up at the top of every leaderboard by accident. Here’s what Statcast has on his 2026 season across 261 plate appearances:

  • 17 home runs and 38 RBI
  • AVG: .248
  • OPS: .908
  • xwOBA: .415 (what his contact quality says he «should» be producing)
  • Average exit velocity: 94.1 mph
  • Barrel rate: 21.7%
  • Hard-hit rate: 57.3% (balls hit at 95+ mph)

How that compares to the rest of MLB:

  • xwOBA: 99th percentile (elite)
  • Exit velocity: 98th percentile (elite)
  • Barrel %: 100th percentile (elite)
  • Hard-hit %: 98th percentile (elite)
  • Contact (whiff rate): 11th percentile (one of the lowest in MLB)
