Aaron Judge Hits the IL With a Calf Strain: .871 OPS and the Yankees Without Their Captain in September

Aaron Judge is heading to the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, confirmed by multiple reports including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. The news lands at the worst possible time: September, the final stretch of the regular season, with Judge in the middle of one of the most productive stretches of his 2026 campaign.

How Serious Is a Calf Strain?

A calf strain can range from a minor scare to a multi-week absence depending on severity. The 10-day IL is the minimum — not the ceiling. The Yankees haven’t disclosed how bad it is, so that «10 days» is a floor, not a promise. When Bryan Hoch — the beat writer directly tied to the Yankees organization — reports it, the club already knows the full picture. The rest of us are still waiting.

Why Losing Judge Right Now Hurts So Much

September in MLB isn’t a normal month. Rosters expand, playoff positioning gets decided, and every game carries extra weight. Losing your best hitter in this stretch is the worst-case scenario — and that’s exactly where the Yankees find themselves.

In 66 games played in 2026, Aaron Judge has put up 18 home runs and 41 RBI with an OPS of .871. For context: anything above .850 puts you squarely in the top tier of hitters in the league. Judge is there — and he’s doing it with a .241 AVG that sounds modest until you notice the 43 walks alongside it. Pitchers simply don’t want to challenge him.

His xwOBA of .396 — what he should be producing based on contact quality alone — ranks among the best in the majors. Pair that with a 94 mph average exit velocity and a barrel rate of 20.9%, and the story is clear: the swing is fine. The body isn’t.

Judge’s 2026 Statcast Numbers

  • Plate appearances: 285
  • Home runs: 18
  • RBI: 41
  • AVG: .241
  • OPS: .871
  • xwOBA: .396
  • Average exit velocity: 94 mph
  • Barrel rate: 20.9%
  • Hard-hit rate: 57.5% (balls hit 95+ mph)
  • Sprint speed percentile: 31st

The numbers tell a straightforward story: Judge has been hitting the ball as well as ever in 2026. The calf strain is a body issue, not a performance one. That makes the timing even more frustrating for a Yankees team that needs him most right now.
