Ángel Montás: 400-Foot Home Runs at 12, $5.5M Deal with Toronto, and a World Stage at 15

At 15 years old, 6-foot-2, and with a reported $5.5 million verbal agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays already circulating among MLB insiders, Ángel Montás is set to become the most-watched name at the 2026 WBSC U-15 World Championship (Mérida and Cancún, September 25 – October 4). The Santo Domingo native has been called up to the Dominican Republic national team — ranked No. 12 in the world at the U-15 level — for a tournament where defending champion Japan is the heavy favorite and Cuba is the very first opponent.

Who Is Ángel Montás — and Why MLB Already Wants Him

Montás plays third base and left field out of Santo Domingo. The scouting report making rounds among MLB insiders grades him 70+ in power, 60+ in contact, and 60+ in arm strength — a combination that rarely shows up on a 15-year-old’s sheet. Perfect Game, the most respected youth scouting platform in the game, described him as having «enormous bat speed with power to all fields» when he was still 13.

The verbal agreement with Toronto was reported in August 2026 by multiple insiders, with figures ranging between $5.5 and $5.7 million. Neither side has officially confirmed it — deals of this type can’t be announced until the player turns 16 and the international signing window opens, which for Montás would be January 2028. Until then, the number lives in unofficial-report territory, but the consistency of the sources makes it hard to dismiss.

For context: if the bonus lands in that range, it would rank among the highest ever paid to an international prospect in MLB history. The top bonus in the 2023 international class was Ethan Salas at $5.6 million. Montás is already in that conversation — before throwing a single pitch in organized baseball.

The Toughest Group in the Tournament

The Dominican Republic drew Group A — the hardest bracket in the field. Their opponents:

  • Japan — No. 1 in the world, defending champion
  • Mexico — No. 6
  • Cuba — No. 10
  • Germany — No. 18
  • South Africa — No. 23

Ranked No. 12, the Dominican Republic enters as the second-lowest-ranked team in the group — just above Germany — but with the kind of talent that has historically defined Caribbean baseball.

Their tournament debut comes on September 25 against Cuba at Estadio Kukulcán in Mérida, the tournament’s main venue with a capacity of roughly 15,000. There’s already backstory: Cuba finished first and the Dominican Republic finished second in the Caribbean Qualifier, so the rivalry carries weight from the jump.

400-Foot Home Runs at 12 — Now on a World Stage

The number that keeps circulating about Montás is this: he was already hitting home runs over 400 feet at age 12. Scouts write that kind of thing in all caps, because at that age the entire field barely stretches that far. At 15, with the frame he has now, the projection is of a hitter who can change games at any level.

For Montás, this tournament is more than a chance to represent his country. WBSC U-15 World Championships serve as a showcase in front of MLB scouts closely tracking signing-age players. A standout performance against Japan or Cuba won’t change the verbal agreement that reportedly already exists — but it can raise the stakes of the conversation when the ink finally dries in 2028.

The 2026 WBSC U-15 World Championship opens September 25 in Mexico. Ángel Montás will be there in a Dominican uniform, facing the best young pitching in the world. The Blue Jays — and several other organizations already watching — will be paying close attention.
