History

The Diamondbacks were born in 1996 as a Major League expansion team, becoming the newest club of their era. Their arrival in Phoenix revitalized baseball in Arizona, and they quickly earned relevance in the National League West. The team played its first seasons at Tucson’s ballpark before moving to Chase Field in Phoenix.

The franchise enjoyed meteoric growth: just five years after its founding, in 2001, the Diamondbacks won their first and only World Series title, defeating the New York Yankees in an epic Fall Classic. That team, led by stars like Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, remains the symbol of the franchise’s identity. Since then, the club has moved through cycles of contention and rebuilding, but it holds its place as a power in the NL West.

Titles and honors

The 2001 World Series title is the greatest achievement in Diamondbacks history. In that memorable Fall Classic, the team beat the Yankees in five games, with the series decided in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. That title put Arizona on the professional baseball map and remains the only championship in franchise history.

Beyond the World Series crown, the Diamondbacks have won several division titles and reached the postseason on multiple occasions, establishing themselves as one of the most competitive teams in the NL West over the past two decades.

Key players

Randy Johnson, known as The Big Unit, was the cornerstone of the Diamondbacks in their glory years. The left-hander was crucial to the 2001 title and won multiple Cy Young Awards with Arizona. Curt Schilling was another pillar of that championship team, winning three games in the 2001 World Series.

In more recent times, players like Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll have carried the team’s torch. Marte has been a consistent All-Star and a centerpiece of the offense, while Carroll represents the franchise’s future — a star prospect who has become an impact player.

Did you know?

The Diamondbacks won their World Series title in just their fifth season of existence, making them one of the fastest teams to win a championship after their founding in the modern Major League era. That feat is still remembered with admiration in Phoenix, where the team knocked off none other than the mighty New York Yankees in the 2001 World Series.
