Baseball has nine defensive positions: the pitcher, the catcher, four infielders and three outfielders. Each has its number and its job, and together they cover the whole field.
The battery and the infield
The pitcher (1) throws and the catcher (2) receives: they’re the «battery.» The infield has first base (3), second base (4), third base (5) and the shortstop (6), who covers between second and third and is usually the best defender.
The outfield
Deep in back are the three outfielders: left (7), center (8) and right (9). The center fielder covers the most ground and needs the most speed. With these nine positions every play is scored — which is why a double play is written, for example, as «6-4-3.»
FAQ
Which is the hardest position?
Usually the shortstop, because of the number of plays and the arm and reflexes required.
Is the designated hitter a position?
Not on defense: the DH only bats, and doesn’t take a spot in the field.
