Bauer Clears Neck Scare, Will Start Game 3 for Diablos Rojos vs. Oaxaca

Trevor Bauer is good to go. The Diablos Rojos del México confirmed Tuesday that their American right-hander has cleared the neck discomfort that had put his availability in doubt, and he will start Game 3 of the team’s playoff series against the Guerreros de Oaxaca at Estadio Yu’Va. With the series still very much up for grabs, having Bauer on the mound instead of a fallback option changes everything for Mexico City.

From Rest to Mound in Record Time

The uncertainty lasted only hours. Bauer reported neck tightness ahead of Game 3 and the Diablos faithful held their breath — but the coaching staff confirmed his availability the same day as the game. Reporter Irving Furlong broke the news on X, putting an end to the speculation before it had much time to breathe.

In a playoff series, every starting pitcher matters twice as much. If the Diablos lose Game 3 in Oaxaca, their backs are against the wall. Having Bauer — not a backup arm — on the hill that day is the difference between playing with a safety net and playing without one.

Why Bauer Is the Right Card to Play Right Now

Bauer came to the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol with a résumé that mixes elite talent with an unconventional path. He won the NL Cy Young Award in 2020 with the Cincinnati Reds, posting a 1.73 ERA over 73 innings in that shortened but historic season. After several years away from MLB, he took his career through international leagues before landing in Mexico.

His Baseball Savant profile tells the story of what made him dominant at the highest level: a deep pitch arsenal, above-average fastball velocity, and a sharp slider that generated consistent swing-and-miss. Those tools don’t disappear in the LMB — if anything, they become harder for Mexican League hitters to solve.

The fact that the Diablos’ coaching staff backed him for Game 3 even with a compromised neck says plenty: they believe a 90% Bauer is still the best card on the table.

Estadio Yu’Va and What Comes Next

Playing in Oaxaca is no minor detail. Estadio Yu’Va boasts one of the loudest and most loyal fanbases in the LMB, and home-field momentum is a real factor in short playoff series. The Diablos need to quiet that crowd from the very first out.

If Bauer can stay effective for five or six innings — limiting damage with his varied repertoire — the Diablos bullpen has room to close things out. A short outing or an early exit, on the other hand, would put enormous pressure on the relievers in hostile territory.

The 2026 LMB playoff season just got a whole lot more interesting.
