Benches Clear, 3 Ejected in Heated Pericos vs. Olmecas Championship Series Game 2

One hit batsman was all it took. In Game 2 of the LMB South Zone Championship Series, played this Sunday at Estadio Centenario 27 de Febrero in Villahermosa, a plunking set off a bench-clearing incident between the Pericos de Puebla and Olmecas de Tabasco that ended with 3 ejections — all of it with Puebla already up 1-0 in the series and four wins away from the Serie del Rey.

The pitch that lit the fuse

A Pericos batter got hit, and that was enough. Both dugouts emptied, the tension that had been building throughout the series spilled onto the field, and umpires stepped in to restore order. When the dust settled, three players had been ejected. Official names and the full scope of the penalties are still pending confirmation from the league.

Worth being clear about what we know and what we don’t: the source reports that players tried to go at each other — reflecting the heat of the moment, not necessarily a confirmed exchange of punches. In bench-clearing situations in baseball, ejections typically come from leaving the dugout, not just from physical contact. Without confirmed video or an official umpire statement, we can’t say with certainty that punches were actually thrown.

The moment the series exploded

Context matters here. Olmecas entered Game 2 already under pressure: Puebla had taken Game 1 on Saturday, August 29, by a score of 5-1, with Vladimir Gutiérrez turning in five solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Falling behind 2-0 at home before heading to Puebla for Games 3, 4 and 5 would have been a near-fatal blow.

The stakes were even sharper given that Olmecas had dominated the regular-season head-to-head, going 6-3 against Puebla in 2026. And Seth Beer came into the series hitting .484 against the Pericos in the regular season, with 2 home runs and 11 RBI against them — making the situation all the more frustrating for the Tabasco club. The tension didn’t start with that hit batsman. It had been building for a while.

What’s next: the series shifts to Puebla

The series follows a 2-3-2 format. With both Villahermosa games now in the books, Games 3, 4 and 5 move to Estadio Hermanos Serdán in Puebla from September 1–3. If necessary, Games 6 and 7 return to Villahermosa on September 5 and 6.

The winner advances to the Serie del Rey to face the North Zone champion, where the Sultanes de Monterrey and Toros de Tijuana are still settling their own finalist. One thing is already certain: the LMB will have a new champion in 2026 — the back-to-back champion Diablos Rojos del México were eliminated by these same Pericos in the previous round.
