The Diablos Rojos del México have their man — and they’re making it official on Monday. Benjamín ‘Benji’ Gil will be introduced as the club’s new manager at noon at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City. The franchise announced the press conference Wednesday, October 14, via social media.
What to Expect Monday
The formal press conference is set for Monday, October 19, at the Harp Helú — the Diablos’ home in Mexico City. Gil is expected to address the media alongside team executives, giving fans their first real look at what he has planned for the scarlet dugout.
For the Diablos, this closes a search process that followed their most recent competitive cycle. The most decorated franchise in Liga Mexicana de Béisbol history doesn’t hire a manager every day — Monday carries real institutional weight for the entire league.
Who Is Benji Gil?
Gil was born in Tijuana in 1972, selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1991 Draft, and made his MLB debut in 1993. He spent more than a decade as a shortstop across stints with Texas, Anaheim, and Cincinnati, moving between the big leagues and the minors throughout his playing career.
After hanging up his glove, Gil transitioned into coaching through the player-development systems of several MLB organizations — exactly the profile the Diablos were looking for: someone who knows how the big-league machine works from the inside and understands the Mexican baseball landscape just as well.
For the Diablos’ fan base, the name carries real meaning. Gil belongs to a generation of Mexican players who crossed the border and competed at the highest level. Bringing that back to the Harp Helú dugout means something beyond the tactical — it’s symbolic, too.
What This Move Says About the Diablos
The Diablos are the LMB’s all-time winningest franchise. Pairing that legacy with an ex-MLB skipper who has deep roots in Mexican baseball fits the identity of a club that has always positioned itself as a bridge between the two circuits.
Monday is the official starting point. Gil gets his first microphone as Diablos manager, and the fans get their first chance to hear him talk about the project. At the Harp Helú, that’s about as close as it gets to a first pitch.
