Cody Bellinger now has two Rawlings Gold Gloves on his résumé, and the latest one came in pinstripes. Playing 132 games for the New York Yankees in 2026, Bellinger hit .264 with a .767 OPS — numbers that won’t turn heads at the plate. But when it came to the award for the best glove in center field, there was no debate. The Statcast data explains exactly why.
A Glove That Makes Up for What the Bat No Longer Does
Nobody’s hiding it: Bellinger is not the offensive force he was during his MVP season with the Dodgers. His average bat speed of 69.9 mph sits at the 21st percentile in MLB — bottom quartile. A 6.6% barrel rate and a 37.8% hard-hit rate aren’t scaring opposing pitchers either.
But Gold Gloves aren’t won with bat speed. They’re won with footwork, first-step quickness, and the ability to run down balls that most outfielders never reach. On those counts, Bellinger is still in a different tier. The Yankees knew what they were getting when they signed him: a center fielder who saves real runs — not just on a spreadsheet.
The team’s official account said it in two words after the announcement: «Good as Gold.» Hard to argue with that.
The Statcast Contradiction Worth Knowing
Here’s where Bellinger’s numbers get interesting. His bat speed is in the bottom quartile, yet his squared-up rate sits at the 91st percentile — elite territory. When he makes contact, he makes it count. He doesn’t hit the ball hard with power-hitter velocity, but he squares it up at a rate most hitters can’t match.
His xwOBA of .335 (70th percentile) and xBA at the 82nd percentile suggest he’s actually performing better than the surface numbers show — in theory, he should be hitting higher than .264. Some of that gap is BABIP noise, but some of it also reflects that the 2019 version of Bellinger probably isn’t coming back.
Still, 17 home runs and 73 RBI in 132 games are respectable totals for a player whose primary job description is: don’t let anything get past you in center field at Yankee Stadium.
