The Colorado Rockies are the Major League Baseball franchise that has represented Denver since 1992. They play at Coors Field, one of the highest ballparks in pro baseball, sitting a mile above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. With a current record of 41-63 in the National League West, the team is still trying to recapture the spark of its best years.

History

The Rockies were born in 1992 as a Major League expansion team, arriving in Denver with the promise of bringing big-league baseball to Colorado. Their first game came on April 26, 1993, marking the start of a new era in the region. The team moved into Coors Field in 1995, a groundbreaking ballpark that became a symbol of identity for the franchise and the city.

The brightest moment came in 2007, when the Rockies won the NL West with a 90-73 record and advanced to the World Series. That team, led by Matt Holliday, Todd Helton and other talents, captured Denver’s imagination and cemented the club as a legitimate contender. Although they fell to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, that run left a lasting legacy with the fan base.

Over their three decades, the Rockies have gone through cycles of hope and rebuilding, but they have always kept a base of passionate fans in Colorado.

Titles and honors

The Rockies have never won a World Series, but their lone trip to the Fall Classic came in 2007, after they won the NL West. That year was special: the team finished the regular season with 90 wins and then won a dramatic division series against the San Diego Padres before facing the Red Sox in the World Series.

As for division titles, the Rockies have won the NL West on several occasions, establishing themselves as one of the more competitive teams in the National League West throughout their history. The club has produced multiple Silver Slugger Awards and has had All-Star players who left their mark on the franchise.

Key players

Todd Helton is the most iconic figure in Rockies history. The first baseman played 17 seasons with the team (1997-2013) and became a symbol of the franchise, winning two Silver Slugger Awards and earning five All-Star selections. Helton racked up more than 2,500 hits in a Colorado uniform and is considered the greatest player in Rockies history.

Matt Holliday was another key pillar, especially during the 2007 title run. The outfielder won the Silver Slugger Award in 2007 and was a multiple-time All-Star with Colorado. More recently, the team has leaned on players like Willi Castro, Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman to build its competitive future.

Did you know?

Coors Field is known as the most hitter-friendly ballpark in the Major Leagues, in part because of its mile-high location in Denver. The thin air and lack of oxygen make the ball travel farther, which has sparked debate about the pros and cons of playing in Colorado. This unique trait has defined the team’s identity and shaped its roster-building strategy over the years.
