George Lombard Jr. walked into Yankee Stadium on August 5, 2026, and turned his first MLB hit into a 392-foot home run. The 21-year-old shortstop — the Yankees‘ No. 1 prospect and No. 20 in all of baseball per MLB.com — did it in his second plate appearance, driving an 81 mph sweeper from Hunter Dobbins into the seats in the fifth inning, in front of 41,081 fans in the Bronx. Aaron Judge, watching from the injured list, made his approval known. Some debuts write themselves.
The Third-Youngest Yankee Ever to Homer on Debut
At 21 years and 63 days old, Lombard Jr. became the third-youngest player in Yankees history to hit a home run in his MLB debut. Only Jasson Domínguez — September 2023 — and John Ellis — May 1969 — did it younger. He’s also the second-youngest shortstop in franchise history to accomplish the feat; the only one who beat him to it was Bobby Murcer, who was 19 years old back in 1965.
There’s one more number worth noting: Lombard’s first big-league hit was a home run, something only 14 players in Yankees history have done. That list includes Aaron Judge and Yogi Berra. Not a bad group to join on night one.
One small but important clarification: Lombard struck out in his very first plate appearance. The homer came on his second trip to the plate — his first hit. He didn’t need a second one.
The Captain Is Out, But He’s Still Watching
Judge wasn’t in the dugout that night. The Yankees captain has been on the 60-day IL since May 31 with a fractured rib, with no confirmed return date. His reaction to Lombard’s homer came via social media — not a handshake in the tunnel — which actually makes the moment more interesting: the team’s leader, sidelined, watching the future arrive ahead of schedule.
CC Sabathia also welcomed Lombard to the Bronx online. Two pinstripe legends giving the nod to the prospect who was called up to fill the void left by Anthony Volpe, who had been optioned to Triple-A the day before Lombard’s debut. The Yankees aren’t winging this transition — they’ve been building toward it.
In 56 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, Lombard posted a .268/.405/.845 slash line with 6 home runs, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 209 at-bats. The organization waited for enough evidence. They got it.
The Night Two Brothers Debuted With Home Runs — at the Same Time
If Lombard’s debut wasn’t already enough story for one evening, his family added another chapter. His younger brother, Jacob Lombard — the Marlins‘ 14th overall pick in the 2026 Draft — also hit a home run in his second professional at-bat that same night, playing for Miami’s Single-A affiliate in Jupiter, Florida.
Two Lombard brothers. Two home runs. The same night. Each in their respective debuts.
George Lombard Sr. — third-base coach for the Detroit Tigers and a former big leaguer himself — was in the stands at Yankee Stadium with the boys’ mother to watch his oldest son debut. Hours later, he found out the youngest had gone deep too.
George Jr. was the Yankees’ 26th overall pick in the 2023 Draft out of Gulliver Prep in Pinecrest, Florida, signing for an above-slot $3.3 million bonus at 18 years old. Three years later, he’s in the Yankees’ record books alongside Judge and Berra.
