Guty Ruiz Tears His ACL: The Worst Possible Blow to Olmecas' Playoff Run

Agustín ‘Guty’ Ruiz won’t set foot in the outfield again this postseason. The Olmecas de Tabasco confirmed that their outfielder suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a medial meniscus dislocation in his right knee during Game 3 of the South Zone Championship Series, on September 2 in Puebla. Worst timing imaginable for the worst injury possible.

How It Happened

The injury came in the ninth inning of Game 3 at Estadio Hermanos Serdán. Sebastián Elizalde had just laced a triple when Ruiz left the field unable to continue. The official LMB in-game report logged it as a foot injury, but imaging later revealed the full picture: a torn ACL and medial meniscus dislocation in the right knee.

An ACL tear almost always means surgery and anywhere from six to twelve months of rehab. In practical terms, Ruiz isn’t just losing the rest of the 2026 postseason — his availability for Opening Day 2027 is already in doubt.

Despite losing him, the Olmecas held on to win that game 6-5, taking a 2-1 series lead over the Pericos de Puebla.

What Tabasco Is Losing

The numbers make this hurt even more. In the 2026 regular season, Ruiz slashed .314 with 53 hits, 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 36 RBI — one of the most consistent bats in a Tabasco lineup that went 54-38, second-best in the South Zone behind the Diablos Rojos del México.

He carried that production right into October. Ruiz had 3 home runs in the playoffs, tied with Alan Espinoza for the team lead in the postseason. Losing him with the series barely three games old means facing whatever’s left of this series — and a potential Serie del Rey — with a significant hole in the middle of the order.

The Bigger Picture

The Serie del Rey was scheduled to begin September 9, and the winner of Olmecas-Pericos earns the right to play in it. To get this far, Tabasco already knocked out the Bravos de León in 6 games and the Guerreros de Oaxaca in 7.

That’s the context that makes this moment sting. The Olmecas haven’t been to a South Zone Championship Series since 1997. Their only LMB title came in 1993. Nearly three decades later, the franchise is one series win away from the big stage — and their hottest bat just left on a stretcher.

They still hold the series lead. But a best-of-seven with a gaping hole in your lineup is a very different problem than the one they had Tuesday night. The rest of the roster will have to answer.
