History

The Astros were born in 1962 as the Colt .45s, a name that reflected Houston’s identity as a Texan city. In 1965 they changed their name to the Astros, in honor of the NASA space program based in the city. That change marked the start of a modern identity for the franchise, which would compete in the National League for decades.

The team enjoyed memorable moments in the 1980s and 1990s, establishing itself as a respectable rival in American baseball. However, it was in the 21st century that the Astros went through their biggest transformation. In 2017, after years of rebuilding, they won their first Major League championship, beating the New York Yankees in the Division Series and then the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. That title was historic for the city and cemented Houston as a baseball powerhouse.

In 2021, the Astros returned to the World Series, where they lost to the Atlanta Braves. Their move to the American League in 2013 marked another important milestone, letting them compete in a new division and expand their traditional rivalries.

Titles and honors

The Astros’ greatest achievement is the 2017 World Series championship, when they defeated the Dodgers in an epic seven-game series. Beyond that title, the team has won multiple division titles and been a playoff mainstay over the last decade. With players like Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Peña, the organization has kept a high competitive level in recent years.

Key players

Jose Altuve is the historic face of the modern Astros. The Venezuelan second baseman won the 2017 American League MVP and has been the team’s offensive anchor for more than a decade. Yordan Alvarez, the Cuban outfielder, is another current star who has proven to be an elite hitter with destructive power. Jeremy Peña, the shortstop, was the 2017 World Series MVP and remains key in the lineup.

In the past, figures like Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell were pillars of the franchise in the 1990s and 2000s, carrying the team to multiple playoff appearances. Josh Hader, the left-handed pitcher, represents the present on the Astros’ mound with his ability to dominate hitters.

Did you know?

The Astros have one of the most intense rivalries with the New York Yankees, especially since the 2017 clash in the Division Series. On top of that, the team is known for its scouting and player-development system, which has allowed it to build a competitive team without relying solely on big contracts. The 1965 name change, from Colt .45s to Astros, reflects how Houston embraced its connection to the space race, being home to NASA’s Space Center.
