The MLB postseason gathers 12 teams (six per league) in October and advances by elimination through four rounds until a champion is crowned in the World Series.
The four rounds
It starts with the Wild Card Series (best-of-three). Winners move to the Division Series (best-of-five). Then comes each league’s Championship Series (best-of-seven) and, finally, the World Series (best-of-seven) between the American League and National League champions.
Seeding advantage
The two best teams in each league get a bye in the first round (straight to the Division Series). That rest is a reward for a great regular season, though the layoff can sometimes cool a team off. The World Series winner is the only one who lifts the Commissioner’s Trophy.
