Juan Mora: The Mexican Second Baseman Hitting .438 in the LMP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Juan Mora might not be a household name yet, but the 27-year-old second baseman from Mazatlán is doing something that turns heads: through five games of the 2026-27 Liga Mexicana del Pacífico season, he’s batting .438 with a home run, three RBI, and a 1.363 OPS for the Algodoneros de Guasave. For a player who once hit .115 in High-A, that’s a story worth telling.

Quick Facts

  • Full name: Juan Mora
  • Position: Second base
  • Team: Algodoneros de Guasave (LMP, 2026-27)
  • Jersey number: 80
  • Bats / Throws: Right / Right
  • Height / Weight: 5’9″ / 176 lbs
  • Born: September 30, 1999 — Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico 🇲🇽

Background

Mora grew up in Mazatlán, Sinaloa — a region with deep baseball roots — and signed with the Chicago Cubs organization, making his professional debut in 2021 with the ACL Cubs. He bats and throws right-handed and profiles as a versatile middle infielder.

Minor League Career

His first professional season was genuinely impressive: in 29 games with the ACL Cubs, Mora hit .351 with a 1.054 OPS. That debut raised expectations. The following year with the Single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2022), he held his own — .269 average, 7 home runs, .756 OPS in 81 games.

The 2023 season, though, was a tale of two halves. He posted a solid .278 in 40 games back at Myrtle Beach, but a promotion to High-A South Bend went sideways fast: just a .115 average in 8 appearances. That performance effectively ended his time in the Cubs system.

Back Home in Mexican Winter Ball

Rather than disappear from the game, Mora returned to Mexico and found a more comfortable stage. He spent the 2024-25 winter with the Sultanes de Monterrey (.228, 23 games), then moved to the Venados de Mazatlán — his hometown team — for 2025-26, where he played 62 games and hit .250 with a .662 OPS, adding 1 home run and 10 RBI.

Now with Guasave, he’s taken things up a notch. The early-season numbers are a small sample, but a 1.363 OPS in any context is hard to ignore.

2026-27 LMP Stats

  • Algodoneros de Guasave: 5 G | .438 AVG | 1 HR | 3 RBI | 1.363 OPS | 7 H
  • Venados de Mazatlán: 8 G | .200 AVG | 0 HR | 2 RBI | .440 OPS | 5 H

Career LMP Stats

  • 2025-26 · Venados de Mazatlán: 62 G | .250 AVG | 1 HR | 10 RBI | .662 OPS
  • 2024-25 · Sultanes de Monterrey: 23 G | .228 AVG | 0 HR | 5 RBI | .554 OPS

The Bigger Picture

Here’s the curious thing about Mora: his best professional numbers came on day one — that 1.054 OPS in his rookie year with the Cubs. The path from there to High-A was rough, and the Cubs let him go. But instead of fading out, he came back to Mexico, landed in his hometown, and has gradually rebuilt his game. The current hot streak with Guasave — .438 and a 1.363 OPS — suggests a player who may have simply needed a different environment to unlock what he showed in 2021. Winter ball in Mexico is doing what the Cubs system couldn’t.
