History

The Royals were born in 1968 as a Major League expansion team, arriving in Kansas City after the Athletics moved to Oakland. In their first decades, the team built a solid foundation of talent and competitive consistency. The 1970s and 1980s were years of coming into their own, with playoff appearances and the development of a defensive and offensive identity recognized across the American League.

The 1980s marked the team’s historic peak. The Royals reached the World Series in 1980 against Philadelphia, though they lost in six games. The high point came in 1985, however, when they captured their only World Series title, beating the St. Louis Cardinals in a memorable Fall Classic. That team, led by iconic players, remains the franchise’s ultimate benchmark and sparked a passion in Kansas City that endures to this day.

After that title, the Royals went through cycles of contention and rebuilding. The team kept its presence in the AL Central, with standout moments in 2014 and 2015, when they returned to the World Series in 2014 (losing to the San Francisco Giants) and won the American League Championship Series in 2015.

Titles and honors

The 1985 World Series title is the greatest achievement in the history of the Kansas City Royals. That year they beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, winning four of seven games in a thrilling series that cemented the franchise’s legacy. The Royals also won the American League Championship Series in 2014 and 2015, returning to the World Series both times, though they couldn’t capture a second title.

Throughout their history, the Royals have won multiple division titles and have been consistently competitive in the AL Central, building a track record of quality defensive play and homegrown talent from their minor leagues.
