Alejandro Kirk has Jarren Duran figured out — and Duran still hasn’t found an answer.
The Blue Jays catcher threw out the speedy Red Sox outfielder attempting to steal second base in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game at Rogers Centre, a clean, on-time throw that ended the inning and, effectively, Boston’s last real threat. Toronto held on to win 5-3, pushing the Red Sox to four straight losses — their roughest stretch since going 7-10 in June 2026.

Boston came into Toronto having dropped three in a row and desperately needed a spark. Duran, one of the fastest baserunners in the American League, tried to manufacture one himself. Two outs, 1-1 count, Blue Jays leading 4-3: he took off for second. Kirk’s throw beat him cleanly. Inning over. No runs for Boston.
It wasn’t a lucky bounce or a bad jump. It was a catcher who had done his homework.

He reached the majors in September 2020, and the nickname «Captain Kirk» — a nod to the Star Trek commander and Canadian actor William Shatner — stuck almost immediately during spring training.
In the 2025 World Series, Kirk became the first Mexico-born player to hit a home run in a Fall Classic, and Toronto took the championship. Now, in 2026, the Blue Jays sit at 57-63, grinding through a wild-card race that has more rough patches than they’d like. But nights like Tuesday are a reminder of what Kirk brings to this team — and why, arm or bat, he remains one of the most complete catchers in the league.
