Luis Arraez Was MLB’s Worst Defensive Second Baseman — Now He’s Making Gold Glove Plays for the Phillies

Luis Arraez Was MLB's Worst Defensive Second Baseman — Now He's Making Gold Glove Plays for the Phillies
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On August 26 at T-Mobile Park, Luis Arraez dove full extension and took a sure base hit away up the middle. It was the kind of play nobody — not a single scouting report — would have penciled in for him. And it wasn’t a fluke.

The same player who accumulated -61 Outs Above Average between 2019 and 2025 — the worst figure in all of MLB over that stretch — now sits at +11 OAA on the 2026 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, second-best among all second basemen in the majors. He also leads the big leagues with a .321 batting average. The narrative has been flipped completely.

Nobody Expected Him to Dive for Anything

For years the story on Arraez was clean and simple: genius with the bat, liability with the glove. Those -61 OAA made him one of the most defensively questioned infielders in the game. The Twins wanted him for his average. The Marlins too. But nobody talked about his glove without rolling their eyes.

That changed in 2026. The Giants signed him for $12 million with the explicit understanding that he’d return to second base, and they put him under the guidance of Ron Washington — a coach who has rebuilt defenders throughout his career. Before the trade deadline, San Francisco shipped him to Philadelphia. Arraez arrived and kept doing exactly what he’d been doing: playing solid defense and hitting even better.

It’s worth a caveat: part of the OAA jump with San Francisco has been credited to the team’s strategic positioning, not solely to Arraez himself. The numbers with Philadelphia continue in the same direction, but the full credit isn’t his alone.

What the Numbers Actually Show

The +11 OAA isn’t a small-sample mirage. His Fielding Run Value of +9 puts him in the 99th percentile per Statcast. He’s converting 77–78% of his defensive opportunities into outs, compared to the 74% league average for infielders. Three or four percentage points doesn’t sound like much — but multiplied across 126 games, that’s several hits that simply never happened.

At the plate, the story is what it’s always been — just with a better contract on the horizon. Arraez leads MLB with a .321 average and carries an OPS of .794 on the season. His Statcast profile is one of the strangest in the game: 86.6 mph average exit velocity (11th percentile), 63.2 mph bat speed (1st percentile), barrel rate of just 1.2%, hard-hit rate of 19.6%. He doesn’t hit it hard. He hits it exactly where it needs to go — his squared-up rate and whiff rate are both 100th percentile, elite by any measure.

Why It Matters Right Now

The Phillies are fighting for position in the National League postseason race, and Arraez landed in the cleanup spot. In his first 17 games in Philadelphia he hit .315 with an OPS of .795. He didn’t ease in off the bench — he came in to produce from the four hole.

When the season ends, Arraez hits free agency. Every diving stop, every hit taken off the scoreboard, is also a contract argument. A player who leads the league in batting average and grades out in the 99th percentile defensively is worth considerably more than the $12 million the Giants paid at the start of the year. That August 26 clip from T-Mobile Park isn’t just a highlight — it’s part of the case file he’s building for himself.

The Numbers Behind the Season

Here’s what Statcast has on Arraez through 2026:

  • 549 plate appearances
  • 6 home runs, 54 RBI
  • AVG: .321
  • OPS: .794
  • xwOBA: .310
  • Average exit velocity: 86.6 mph
  • Barrel rate: 1.2%
  • Hard-hit rate: 19.6%
  • Average bat speed: 63.2 mph

How he stacks up league-wide:

  • Bat speed: 1st percentile (among the lowest in MLB)
  • Exit velocity: 11th percentile (among the lowest in MLB)
  • Barrel %: 1st percentile
  • Hard-hit %: 1st percentile
  • Squared-up rate: 100th percentile (elite)
  • Whiff rate: 100th percentile (elite)

The Venezuelan infielder 🇻🇪 is leaving a mark on every Statcast leaderboard in Philadelphia — and the numbers, not the opinions, are what validate a player of his kind.
