MLB Set February 19 as the 2027 Spring Training Start — If the CBA Doesn’t Blow It Up First

MLB Set February 19 as the 2027 Spring Training Start — If the CBA Doesn't Blow It Up First

MLB has officially announced that all 30 clubs will open 2027 Spring Training on February 19, with the option to begin workouts as early as February 9. Cactus League in Arizona, Grapefruit League in Florida — same setup as always, same date across the board. What’s not the same is everything happening before pitchers and catchers report.

The date is real. The context is messy.

This is the calendar move MLB makes every fall: set the date, clubs drop their Cactus and Grapefruit schedules, fans start booking flights to Mesa or Port St. Lucie. This year the Dodgers open at Camelback Ranch against the White Sox; the Yankees head to Dunedin to face the Blue Jays. The Freeway Series — Dodgers vs. Angels — is penciled in for March 21–23. All of it is on paper.

Also on paper: the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. If no deal is reached, the commissioner can impose a lockout — and that February 19 date becomes a placeholder for nothing.

Why these negotiations are different

Owners have put something on the table that has never actually been implemented in MLB history: a salary cap. Reports indicate the proposal includes a payroll ceiling of around $222 million and a floor of $148 million. The union’s response was immediate and unambiguous.

MLBPA interim executive director Bruce Meyer said it plainly in July 2026: «Salary cap is the ultimate excuse not to compete. It’s the ultimate excuse for an owner to say, ‘Gee, I would like to make the team better, but you know I can’t.'»

A salary cap was also proposed during the 1994 strike — the one that wiped out the World Series — but it was never implemented. What’s different now, according to ESPN reports, is that owners are reportedly willing to hold out as long as it takes to get one.

For context: the 2021–22 lockout lasted 99 days — the longest work stoppage in recent MLB history — and didn’t cancel regular-season games, though it did slash and compress Spring Training. A new work stoppage starting in December 2026 has more than enough runway to reach February 19, 2027.

What the calendar looks like if everything goes right

Assuming a deal gets done — or at least an extension is reached — the 2027 regular season is scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 24, with an Opening Night game on Netflix. The Seattle Mariners, for example, already have 31 Cactus League games confirmed, opening February 19 against the Padres at Peoria Stadium. The full Spring Training schedule is live on MLB.com.

  • Camps open: February 9 (early workouts)
  • Spring Training opener: February 19
  • Freeway Series (Dodgers vs. Angels): March 21–23
  • Regular season Opening Night on Netflix: March 24
  • CBA expiration: December 1, 2026

It’s a useful document for planning travel to Arizona or Florida. Just maybe hold off on booking anything nonrefundable until we see how the CBA negotiations play out over the next few weeks. The date MLB put on the map is real. Whether the game being played in December — the negotiating one — leaves it standing is still very much an open question.
