The Monclova Acereros are one of the most reliable postseason fixtures in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol — 12 consecutive playoff appearances, no exceptions. The problem is what keeps happening once they get there.
According to a breakdown shared by baseball analytics account @Beisbolpuro, Monclova hasn’t won a single postseason series since eliminating the Saraperos de Saltillo in the 2021 First Playoff. That’s eight straight series losses — and counting. In August 2026, they’re already in trouble: down 2-1 to Caliente de Durango with Games 4 and 5 still to play in Monclova.
Eight Chances. Eight Eliminations.
To be fair, this isn’t a team that rolls over in October. On August 8, Monclova opened this 2026 series with a jaw-dropping comeback — eight runs in the ninth inning to flip the script and win Game 1, 12-6. That’s not a team that can’t play playoff baseball.
The issue is closing out series. Winning rounds. Advancing. That part hasn’t happened since they beat Saltillo five years ago. Eight tries, eight exits.
They arrived at this First Playoff with a 48-45 regular-season record, good for fifth place in the North Zone — already a step behind their opponent. Caliente de Durango finished 51-42, ten games above .500.
How the 2026 Series Has Gone
After Monclova’s Game 1 rally, Caliente answered with a historic night of their own. On August 9, Daniel Johnson hit three home runs in a single postseason game — making him just the 11th player in LMB history to do that — as Durango cruised to a 9-3 win to even the series.
Game 3, back at Monclova’s Kickapoo Lucky Eagle stadium, wasn’t any kinder to the home side. Spencer Turnbull threw six scoreless innings, Jonathan Villar launched a solo home run to left field in the third to get things going, and Caliente blanked the Acereros 7-0.
- Game 1: Monclova 12, Durango 6 (8-run ninth inning)
- Game 2: Durango 9, Monclova 3 (Daniel Johnson, 3 HR)
- Game 3: Durango 7, Monclova 0 (Turnbull, 6 scoreless IP)
Series: Durango leads 2-1. Games 4 and 5 are still to be played in Monclova as of August 14.
The Franchise Paradox
Monclova’s only Serie del Rey championship came in 2019. Since then, they’ve kept qualifying without fail — and kept getting knocked out without advancing. Guaranteed presence in the postseason, zero guarantee of moving past the first round.
It’s worth noting: the eight-series figure comes from @Beisbolpuro, not from an official LMB release. But the pattern itself is right there in the record books, and the 2026 series is putting it to the test again.
Games 4 and 5 at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle are Monclova’s chance to finally break the streak — or make it nine.
