Mookie Betts' $365 Million Contract With the Dodgers, Fully Explained

When the Los Angeles Dodgers locked up Mookie Betts in July 2020, they didn’t wait to see him play a single game in Dodger blue. Just days after the trade from Boston was finalized, the two sides agreed to a 12-year, $365 million deal — the kind of commitment franchises only make when they’re certain they have a cornerstone player on their hands.

The Contract at a Glance

  • Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Signed: July 22, 2020
  • Length: 12 years
  • Seasons covered: 2021–2032
  • Total guaranteed value: $365 million
  • Average annual value: $30.4 million
  • 2026 salary: $25.2 million
  • Signing bonus: $65 million
  • No-trade clause: Yes

How the Deal Is Structured

The contract runs from 2021 through 2032 at an average of $30.4 million per year. In 2026, Betts earns $25.2 million. He also received a $65 million signing bonus up front — real money in hand from day one.

What makes the architecture of this deal interesting is the deferred money: $115 million is deferred, meaning the Dodgers will continue paying Betts well beyond 2032, all the way through 2044. It’s a common structure for contracts of this size — it softens the immediate payroll hit while spreading payments across decades.

The Fine Print

Betts holds a full no-trade clause, giving him veto power over any deal. The contract is 100% guaranteed, as is standard in MLB — injuries and performance don’t change a thing. The Dodgers are on the hook for every dollar, no matter what.

Where Betts Ranks Among the Highest-Paid Players

  • #5 — Largest contracts in MLB history (total guaranteed value)
  • #5 — Among position players
  • #25 — Highest average annual value among active contracts in 2026
  • #35 — Highest 2026 season salary

Rankings based on total guaranteed value without discounting deferred money. Data from Spotrac and Baseball-Reference as of August 11, 2026.

Betts sits fifth all-time in total contract value and fifth among position players. His $30.4M AAV ranks 25th among active contracts in 2026, and his actual 2026 salary slots him 35th for the season. It’s an elite deal — just no longer the richest on a per-year basis.

How He Got Here

Before this megadeal, Betts had never signed a long-term extension. He arrived in Los Angeles fresh off a brilliant run in Boston, where he had established himself as one of the best two-way players in the American League — elite with the glove, dangerous at the plate. The Dodgers didn’t need to see more. They bet $365 million on his track record and his prime years, and they did it before he’d taken a single at-bat for them.

That bet is the whole story of this contract.
