History
The Mets were born in 1962 as New York’s answer to the departure of the Dodgers and Giants to the West Coast. In their early years they were a not-very-competitive expansion team, but in 1969 the miracle arrived: under manager Gil Hodges, they won their first championship unexpectedly, defeating the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series.
The 1980s were another golden era. With figures like Keith Hernández, Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, the Mets won their second World Series title in 1986, beating the Boston Red Sox in an epic Fall Classic. That team is remembered as one of the most talented in franchise history.
Since then, the Mets have had uneven seasons, alternating competitive years with difficult stretches. They reached the World Series in 2000 against the Yankees but lost. In recent years, they have bet on high-profile signings like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto to compete for titles again.
Titles and honors
The Mets have won two World Series championships: the first in 1969 against the Baltimore Orioles, and the second in 1986, defeating the Boston Red Sox. Both titles are iconic moments in the history of the franchise and the city of New York.
In addition, the team has won multiple NL East titles over the decades, although in recent years it has struggled to maintain competitive consistency in one of the strongest divisions in Major League Baseball.

Did you know?
The Mets and the New York Yankees are rivals in the same city, but they play in different leagues: the Mets in the National League and the Yankees in the American League. When they meet in the World Series, as they did in 2000, it creates one of the most intense rivalries in baseball. That year, the Subway Series saw the Yankees win in five games, which remains a topic of debate among fans of both teams in New York.
