The Ministerio Sobre Las Alas del Águila Little League, out of León, Nicaragua, came from behind against the Liga Municipal de Tijuana on Sunday to earn its third straight win at the 2026 Little League World Series. That victory made history: for the first time ever, a Nicaraguan team will play in an international semifinal at Williamsport.
This is a ceiling that even the celebrated 2022 Nicaraguan squad — which beat Puerto Rico, Japan, and Panama in the same tournament — never managed to break through. The kids from León just broke it.
Three Games, Three Comebacks
Nicaragua didn’t get here by blowing teams out from the first inning. They got here by refusing to lose when they were behind — which is a different and harder thing.
- August 19 vs. Dominican Republic: A 2-1 win to open the tournament. Pitcher Clemente Sevilla Pichardo threw 5.2 innings, struck out 12 batters on 81 pitches, and allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk. That’s a veteran starter’s line, not a nervous kid’s.
- August 21 vs. Panama: Nicaragua trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth inning and still won 6-4. Kendry Araúz got the win on the mound and also drove in two runs.
- August 23 vs. Mexico: Same script, same result. León rallied again, eliminated Tijuana from the winners’ bracket, and kept their unbeaten run alive.
Here’s the number that puts this whole run in context: Nicaragua arrived in Williamsport having outscored opponents 92-13 in the Latin America qualifying tournament. This wasn’t a team that got hot at the right moment — it was a team that had been dialed in for a long time.
Why 2026 Feels Different From 2022
The 2022 Nicaraguan team — the 14 de Septiembre Little League from Managua — was something special. Beating Puerto Rico, Japan, and Panama in the same Williamsport field is a genuine achievement. But they fell to Curaçao before the semifinals, and the ceiling held.
The León squad just raised it. Nicaragua will play in an international semifinal at Williamsport for the first time in the history of the tournament.
The international final is set for Saturday, August 29. The World Series championship game follows on Sunday, August 30. The tournament runs a double-elimination format with 20 teams — 10 from the United States, 10 international — in its 79th edition. Nicaragua represents the Latin America region in the international bracket, and heading into Sunday’s game was the only unbeaten team in that bracket.
Mexico Had Shown Up Ready — Until They Met León
Tijuana wasn’t a pushover coming in. The Liga Municipal de Tijuana opened with a commanding 7-1 win over Australia, with Jorge Fonseca on the mound and Gareth García driving in two runs. They had shown both offensive punch and pitching control.
Against León, none of that translated. Nicaragua came back again, Tijuana was knocked into the elimination bracket, and the Leoncitos kept rolling.
In the Little League World Series, just like in MLB, some teams look sharp against opponents who don’t push back — and then run into a wall when the other side simply won’t quit. Nicaragua was that wall.
