It took 13 innings and 33 years. In the early hours of August 28, 2026, Alan Espinoza launched a walk-off home run in the 13th to give the Olmecas de Tabasco a 5-3 victory over the Guerreros de Oaxaca in Game 7 of the South Zone Series — punching their ticket to the South Zone Championship Series for the first time since 1993, the year Tabasco won the only LMB title in franchise history.
The comeback that made it possible is the kind you don’t forget: Tabasco trailed the series 3-1 and was one loss from going home. They won three straight instead.
A Seven-Game Movie
Not many people gave Tabasco a real shot when Oaxaca pushed them to the edge of elimination. A 54-38 regular-season record — second-best in the South Zone — wasn’t enough to silence the doubters. But the Olmecas took Game 5, then blew out Oaxaca 8-1 in Game 6 on a three-run homer by Agustín Ruiz, and then came back for the most dramatic possible Game 7.
The seventh game stayed knotted deep into extra innings. In the 13th, with all of Villahermosa holding its breath, Espinoza sent one over the wall — his third home run of the postseason. Walk-off, 5-3, series over. Parque Centenario 27 de Febrero erupted in a scene the stadium hadn’t seen in over three decades.
The 1993 Echo
The parallels to the 1993 championship team are hard to ignore. That squad, managed by Juan Navarrete, finished third in the South Zone and wasn’t anyone’s favorite heading into the postseason. They swept through series after series and on August 31 of that year sealed the franchise’s only title, beating the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 4-1 in the Serie Final.
The 2026 Olmecas aren’t champions yet — and it’s worth being clear about where they stand: what they’ve earned is a berth in the South Zone Championship Series, the penultimate round before the Serie del Rey. One more step to go. But the blueprint looks familiar: an underdog nobody expected, a comeback from the brink, and an entire city awake at midnight celebrating in the streets of Villahermosa.
Next Up: Pericos de Puebla
Their opponent in the South Zone Championship Series was already waiting. The Pericos de Puebla knocked out the Diablos Rojos del México — the two-time defending champions — in their own Zone Series and arrive as the team to beat in the southern bracket. The series was set to begin Saturday, August 29, 2026.
On the other side of the bracket, the Sultanes de Monterrey and Toros de Tijuana are still deciding who comes out of the north.
History is on Tabasco’s side right now. If they follow the 1993 script — underdogs, no quit, keep winning — the dream of a second championship is real. First, they have to get past Puebla.
