PCA Wins NL MVP Player Poll 15-4 Over Ohtani

ESPN asked 21 active players from nine different teams one question: who deserves the 2026 NL MVP? It wasn’t close. Pete Crow-Armstrong got 15 votes. Shohei Ohtani got 4. Two players split their answer. The Cubs and Dodgers were left out of the poll to avoid any conflict of interest — which, if anything, makes the result more meaningful.

Why a peer vote hits different than a betting line

Betting markets have had Ohtani and Crow-Armstrong trading the top spot for weeks. Those numbers reflect wagered money, not baseball expertise. Jesse Rogers’s ESPN poll is something else entirely: it’s the opinion of players who face these guys from the other dugout, who watch them up close every day, who compete against them in September when every game is worth twice as much.

The exclusion of Cubs and Dodgers doesn’t weaken the result — it strengthens it. No teammates, no clubhouse loyalties. The 15 players who chose Crow-Armstrong had no agenda. That said, this poll isn’t the actual award: BBWAA writers cast the official MVP ballots, not players. But peer consensus captures something the numbers sometimes can’t.

What Ohtani’s situation looks like right now

Ohtani hasn’t pitched since July 3 due to knee discomfort. His offensive line is still elite — .295 AVG, 29 HR, 78 RBI — and before the injury he was 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA in 85.2 innings. But baseball rewards the full package, and several surveyed players said explicitly they’d reconsider their vote if Ohtani returns to the mound in September. That’s still an open question.

What Crow-Armstrong did to earn those 15 votes

The season didn’t start this way. In April, PCA’s OPS hovered around .605 and the conversation was very different. Then something clicked around May 30: since that date he’s hitting .335/.440/.698 with a wRC+ of 205 — meaning he’s producing at roughly twice the rate of the average big-league hitter. That’s not a hot streak. That’s three months.

The moment that put it in neon lights came August 17 against the White Sox: leadoff home run in the first inning, walk-off home run in the ninth for a 7-5 win. He went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and became the first player in Cubs history to hit both a leadoff and a walk-off homer in the same game. That game happened two days before ESPN published the poll. Hard to believe it didn’t factor in.

The full-season line: .279 AVG, 31 HR, 79 RBI, 31 SB, .928 OPS in 128 games. His 7.7 WAR leads all of MLB in 2026. He also leads the National League in outs above average, making him one of the best defensive center fielders in the game. Crow-Armstrong and Ohtani rank 1-2 in the NL in both OPS and OPS+, with PCA out front in wRC+.

The number worth watching before you close the debate

Here’s the fine print. Crow-Armstrong’s actual wOBA (.396) leads the National League. But his xwOBA — what Statcast says he should be producing based on contact quality — is .359, a 37-point gap. That doesn’t mean his numbers are fake, but it does suggest some of his production is riding an elevated BABIP and carries some regression risk.

For context: his squared-up rate sits at the 15th percentile, one of the lowest marks in MLB. His chase rate is at the 22nd percentile. PCA isn’t making the cleanest contact by Statcast standards. What he is doing is hitting the ball hard when he does connect: 49% hard-hit rate (89th percentile) and a 12.5% barrel rate (83rd percentile). His average exit velocity of 90.2 mph puts him at the 69th percentile.

September will tell us whether that wOBA-xwOBA gap closes or widens. And if Ohtani steps back on the mound, the whole conversation shifts. For now, 15 of the 21 players surveyed have already made up their minds.
