From Domino’s to Little Caesars: The Pizza War That Shaped Detroit Baseball

From Domino's to Little Caesars: The Pizza War That Shaped Detroit Baseball

In 1992, Mike Ilitch made the kind of purchase that only makes sense in baseball: he bought the Detroit Tigers from Tom Monaghan — founder of Domino’s Pizza — for $82 million. That alone would be a good story. But Ilitch happened to own Little Caesars, Domino’s biggest rival. The irony has layers, like a well-made pie.

A Minor Leaguer Who Came Back as the Boss

Ilitch wasn’t just another businessman writing a check. Back in the 1950s, he had been a minor league player in the Detroit Tigers organization. His playing career never reached the majors, but the connection to that franchise stuck with him. When Little Caesars made him wealthy enough to act on it, he knew exactly where the money was going.

Monaghan, for his part, had owned the Tigers since 1983 — nine years before selling to his pizza-chain rival. He walked away from baseball in 1992, though Domino’s remained his flagship. He later sold that too, but his name will always be attached to a decade of Tigers ownership that most fans have largely forgotten.

One Purchase, an Entire Sports Empire

The 1992 deal was just the beginning. Ilitch didn’t stop with baseball. He also acquired the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL, building a sports portfolio that turned Detroit into a two-franchise city under one family’s roof. His goal was straightforward: bring winning franchises together under the same business umbrella.

Mike Ilitch died in 2017, but the empire he built is very much alive. His wife, Marian Ilitch, 93, is ranked among the top five wealthiest self-made women in the United States on the Forbes 2026 list, with a net worth of $7.6 billion. The Tigers remain part of the family portfolio, with son Christopher Ilitch playing a central role in running the sports franchises his father assembled.

What the Pizza War Left Behind

As of 2026, the Detroit Tigers are still an Ilitch family property. The team has gone through some lean seasons, but the ownership structure hasn’t changed since that $82 million handshake more than three decades ago.

Almost nobody today remembers that the founder of Domino’s once owned the Tigers. But most baseball fans know that Mike Ilitch — a former Tigers minor leaguer who made his fortune selling pizza — is the man who built Detroit’s modern sports identity.

  • 1983: Tom Monaghan (Domino’s) acquires the Detroit Tigers
  • 1992: Mike Ilitch (Little Caesars) buys the Tigers for $82 million
  • 2017: Mike Ilitch passes away; family retains ownership
  • 2026: Marian Ilitch’s net worth stands at $7.6 billion (Forbes)

Sometimes the best investment in baseball isn’t the one that promises a championship. It’s the one that connects to a personal story — like a minor leaguer who spent decades waiting to buy the team he once played for.

Ownership data verified as of August 12, 2026.
