Seattle is looking for a manager for 2027, and Rocco Baldelli’s name is already on the table. The former Twins skipper — 527 wins, 505 losses and three AL Central division titles in seven seasons — is among the candidates the Mariners hope to interview before October 31, according to MLB Trade Rumors on October 16, 2026. The search started with more than 40 names. The list is getting shorter.
A 76-win team that needs something new
Seattle closed the 2026 season at 76-86, their first losing record in a full campaign since 2019. Dan Wilson, who had guided the club to the ALCS in 2025, paid the price for the collapse and was let go at season’s end. Baseball president Jerry Dipoto was direct at his September 28 press conference: «We will go outside to hire our manager. We need fresh thought. We need something new.»
Dipoto also laid out the profile he’s after: «Generally speaking, we’re just looking for someone who has high character, a growth mindset, has the ability to think strategically in the context of a Major League game when that happens very quickly,» he told MLB.com in October 2026. Baldelli, with seven full seasons of big-league managing experience, fits that description almost word for word.
Who is Rocco Baldelli and why is he in this conversation?
Baldelli arrived in Minnesota in 2019 at 37 years old with zero prior MLB managerial experience. In his very first season he led the Twins to 101 wins and won the American League Manager of the Year Award — making him the youngest winner in the history of that award. Three division titles later (2019, 2020 and 2023), he wrapped up his Minnesota run at 527-505 (.511) and ranks third all-time in Twins managerial wins, behind only Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhire. In 2023 he ended a 19-year postseason series drought for the franchise. Those aren’t small numbers.
He was let go after the 2025 season — at the end of it, not midseason — with Minnesota finishing 70-92. That December he joined the Dodgers‘ front office as a special assistant to baseball president Andrew Friedman, a relationship that dates back to their time together in Tampa Bay. Los Angeles’s early exit from the 2026 NLCS — swept by the Brewers — leaves Baldelli available at exactly the moment Seattle needs someone with his résumé.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post framed it on October 13 via X: «Mariners are casting wide net for their managerial job, a plum job due to talent, city, potential. Joe Espada, Rocco Baldelli, Brandon Hyde, David Ross are among possible candidates who’d fit preference for experience. Seattle received permission on Espada.» Baldelli comes in second in that list, but the search is wide open.
The competition: Espada already has an interview
Baldelli isn’t walking into an empty room. Joe Espada — former Astros manager with a 256-229 record and two division titles in three seasons — already has formal interview clearance from Houston, putting him a step ahead in the process. Brandon Hyde and David Ross round out the short list of candidates with prior managerial experience.
Dipoto said he prefers — though doesn’t require — someone who has already managed in the majors. Baldelli, Espada, Hyde and Ross all check that box.
Seattle wants a new skipper in place before October 31, 2026. Seattle and Houston are currently the only two teams with an open managerial vacancy. If Espada lands the Mariners job, Houston would have to reopen its own search. This offseason’s manager market is playing out in two cities, and the clock is ticking.
