History
The Cardinals were born in 1892 as one of the original franchises that have stayed in the same market throughout their entire existence. Although the early years were modest, the team began to establish itself as a power in the early 20th century, especially after settling in St. Louis. The golden era arrived in the 1920s and 1930s, when the club became a consistent winner under Rogers Hornsby and other talents of the time.
The Cardinals’ peak came between 1926 and 1968, a stretch in which they won multiple World Series and established themselves as a dynasty. The 1960s were especially glorious: in 1964 they won the World Series, and in 1968 they repeated the feat with a lineup that featured legendary figures. That winning consistency turned St. Louis into one of the most passionate baseball cities in the United States.
The last few decades have kept the franchise competitive, with regular playoff appearances and a more recent World Series title in 2011, when the Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers in a memorable Fall Classic.
Titles and honors
The Cardinals have won 11 World Series: 1926, 1931, 1934, 1946, 1964, 1967, 1968, 1982, 1987, 2006 and 2011. On top of that, they hold 19 NL Central division titles and numerous League Championship Series appearances. The team has won more than 10,000 games in its history and is consistently competitive in its division.
In 2011, under manager Tony La Russa, the Cardinals won their most recent World Series title by beating the Texas Rangers in six games, with an explosive offense led by Albert Pujols in his final year with the franchise.

Key players
The Cardinals have had some of the greatest players in baseball history. Stan Musial, nicknamed «The Man,» was the face of the franchise for 22 seasons and won three World Series. Rogers Hornsby was an offensive machine who led the team to its first championships in the 1920s. Bob Gibson, a legendary pitcher, won two World Series and was the ace of the rotation in the 1960s.
Albert Pujols is perhaps the most recent icon: the Dominican played 11 seasons with the Cards (2001-2011), won a World Series, two National League MVP awards and became one of the most productive hitters of his era. Iván Herrera is part of the current roster and represents the new generation of talent in the organization.

The Cardinals have one of the most intense rivalries in baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the 1985 National League Championship Series, the Cardinals won controversially in Game 6, when umpire Don Denkinger called Jorge Orsulak safe on a close play that changed the course of the series.
