History
The Rays began playing in 1998 after two years of preparation, arriving as an American League expansion team. Their early seasons were rough: they lost 99 games in their first year and struggled through the 2000s with a team that piled up defeats. The turning point came in 2008, when the Rays won the AL East with a 97-65 record and reached the World Series, facing the Atlanta Braves in the playoffs and then the Boston Red Sox.
