The Charros de Jalisco now have both Ornelas brothers patrolling the outfield — and Tirso wasted exactly zero time making his presence felt.
Tirso Ornelas, the 150th Mexican-born player to debut in MLB, was activated for the LMP 2026-27 season and homered in his very first game on October 20 at Estadio Panamericano. His brother Julián — the MVP of Jalisco’s back-to-back championship run — was in the same lineup that night, giving the Charros an outfield combination that felt almost unfair on paper.
The Brother the Outfield Was Missing
Julián Ornelas was already the face of the Charros’ outfield. In the 2025-26 Serie Final, he hit .400, slugged two home runs, drove in six runs, and walked away with MVP honors as Jalisco swept the Tomateros de Culiacán 4-0 on January 25, 2026. It was hard to imagine that outfield getting better.
The Charros found a way: bring in the younger brother.
Tirso Abraham Ornelas was born March 11, 2000, in Tijuana. The 6’3″ left-handed hitter came up through the San Diego Padres system as one of the most closely watched Mexican prospects of his generation. On April 19, 2025, he stepped onto an MLB field for the first time, becoming the 150th player born in Mexico to do so. In February 2026, the Padres designated him for assignment, and he was assigned to the Double-A San Antonio Missions in April — which cleared the way for him to be available with Jalisco from day one of the winter season, not as a midseason pickup.
First Home Run, and the Hunt for a Three-Peat
The official announcement said he’d be ready «starting Tuesday,» but Tirso didn’t wait. On October 20 he was already in the lineup against the Águilas de Mexicali. In a wild 21-run ballgame that the Charros lost 10-11 at the Panamericano, Tirso drew a walk and went deep for his first home run of the 2026-27 season. The result didn’t go Jalisco’s way, but the new addition delivered exactly what a back-to-back champion expects from a reinforcement: production from the first at-bat.
The stakes around his activation couldn’t be higher. The Charros opened the 2026-27 season on October 13 with an 8-5 win over the Jaguares de Nayarit and are now chasing a three-peat — something only one team in LMP history has ever accomplished. The club already owns four titles (2018-19, 2021-22, 2024-25, and 2025-26) plus the 2026 Serie del Caribe. Manager Benjamín Gil, who steered both championship runs, is still in the dugout — and now he has two Ornelas brothers to pencil into the outfield.
Why This Activation Is Bigger Than One Name
This isn’t just about individual talent. It’s about what two brothers in the same outfield mean for a team trying to make history.
- Julián knows what it costs to win a Serie Final — he was the best player on the floor when it mattered most.
- Tirso arrives with something to prove after a complicated season in the Padres system.
- A left-handed outfielder with power and MLB experience is an asset on any winter roster, and especially on one that carries the target of being the team everyone is gunning for.
If the Charros are going to become the second franchise in LMP history to win three straight titles, every reinforcement needs to produce from the first day. Tirso already hit his home run. The count is running.
