Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 Million Contract With Toronto, Fully Explained
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays made it official on April 6, 2025: a 14-year extension worth $500 million guaranteed, covering the 2026–2039 seasons. It’s the largest contract in Blue Jays history and puts Vlad Jr. among the highest-paid players in baseball.

The Contract at a Glance

  • Team: Toronto Blue Jays
  • Signed: April 6, 2025
  • Length: 14 years (2026–2039)
  • Total guaranteed value: $500 million
  • Average annual value: $35.7 million
  • 2026 salary: $40.3 million
  • Signing bonus: $325 million
  • No-trade clause: Yes

How the Deal Is Structured

This contract is built differently than most. Of the $500 million total, $325 million — 65% of the deal — is structured as a signing bonus spread across the 14 years rather than paid upfront. That approach carries tax advantages for both sides and also serves as a hedge against potential labor disputes in MLB.

The average annual value lands at $35.7 million, with a 2026 salary of $40.3 million. Guerrero also has a full no-trade clause, giving him veto power over any deal Toronto might try to make involving him.

The Fine Print

There are no opt-outs and no traditional deferred money in this agreement. The contract is 100% guaranteed — Toronto owes Vlad Jr. every dollar regardless of injury, performance, or front-office changes. Fully guaranteed deals are standard in MLB, but the sheer size of this one underscores just how committed the Blue Jays are to building around their franchise cornerstone.

Where Vlad Jr. Ranks Among the Highest-Paid in Baseball

  • #3 — Largest contracts in MLB history (total guaranteed value)
  • #3 — Among position players (excluding pitchers)
  • #11 — Highest average annual value among contracts active in 2026
  • #3 — Highest salary in MLB for the 2026 season

Rankings based on total guaranteed value without discounting deferred money. Data from Spotrac and Baseball-Reference as of August 11, 2026.

Before This Deal

Guerrero Jr. arrived in Toronto as one of the most hyped international prospects in recent memory and made his MLB debut in 2018. From 2022 through 2025, he settled his salaries through the arbitration process — the standard route for players with fewer than six years of service time. That stretch gave him the platform to prove he was an elite hitter year after year.

With this extension, Vlad Jr. locked in both his financial future and his baseball home, skipping free agency entirely and ensuring his prime years will be spent in Toronto.
