The strikeout —K or SO— happens when a batter piles up three strikes and is out without putting the ball in play. It’s one of the few stats with two faces: for the pitcher it’s an achievement; for the hitter, a failure.

The two faces of the strikeout

  • For the pitcher: racking up strikeouts is a sign of dominance, because it retires the batter without relying on the defense.
  • For the hitter: striking out too much hurts, though today it’s more tolerated in big-power bats.

How to read it

Pitcher strikeouts (season) Level
250 or more Elite dominator
180 – 249 Very good
Fewer than 120 Not very dominant

Examples with players

  • Pedro Martínez and Johan Santana were among the most dominant Latino pitchers by strikeouts of their era.

Leaders and records

  • Single-season strikeout record: Nolan Ryan, with 383 in 1973.
  • Career record: Nolan Ryan, with 5,714.

Why there are more strikeouts than ever

The chase for power and the rising velocity of pitchers have sent strikeouts soaring in modern baseball, one of the game’s biggest changes over the past two decades.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the K sometimes written backwards?

A normal K marks a swinging strikeout; a backwards K, a called strikeout (no swing).

Is it really bad for a hitter to strike out?

Today it’s more tolerated in power hitters, as long as they make up for it with home runs and walks.
