A walk —BB, also called a base on balls or a free pass— happens when the pitcher throws four balls (pitches outside the strike zone) to a batter, who then moves to first base for free. It isn’t a hit, but reaching base without making an out is hugely valuable.

The intentional walk

Sometimes the defense chooses to put a batter on base on purpose —the intentional walk— to face an easier hitter or to avoid a dangerous one. It’s a strategic move, especially with feared sluggers at the plate.

Why does it matter?

The walk is the foundation of OBP: a patient hitter who draws a lot of walks helps his team even when his average isn’t high. That’s why plate discipline is one of the most prized skills in the game today.

Records and examples

  • Career walks record: Barry Bonds, with 2,558, who also owns the record for intentional walks.
  • Juan Soto is the modern face of patience: his «Soto shuffle» is the symbol of his famous eye at the plate.
