A stolen base is when a runner advances to the next base during the pitch, using his speed, without the batter making contact. It’s pure daring: a race against the catcher’s arm.
How you steal
The runner takes a lead off the base and breaks the moment the pitcher throws. He has to beat the catcher’s throw to the bag. Get caught and it’s an out; make it and you’re credited with a stolen base. The most common is first to second.
The return of the steal
Bigger bases and the pitch clock, since 2023, revived the steal in the modern game. The all-time leader is Rickey Henderson, with 1,406 stolen bases, an untouchable mark. Today speedsters like Elly De La Cruz and Ronald Acuña Jr. have made it fashionable again.
