Fielding percentage is the oldest defensive stat: it measures what share of the plays a fielder attempts he completes without committing an error. It’s simple and intuitive, but today it’s considered incomplete.
How is it calculated?
Fielding % = (Putouts + Assists) ÷ (Putouts + Assists + Errors)
A percentage of .980 means the player commits an error on only 2 of every 100 plays he touches.
Its big limitation
Fielding percentage only penalizes errors, but it doesn’t reward range: a slow outfielder who only catches the easy ones can post a sky-high percentage, while one with great range who reaches more plays (and sometimes muffs a tough one) can come out looking worse. That’s why metrics like OAA and DRS were created.
