Hal Steinbrenner, 57, has run the New York Yankees since 2008 as managing general partner and the person of control before MLB. He inherited the role when his father George’s health declined, then inherited a quarter of the family fortune when George died in 2010. The Steinbrenner family and their partners at Yankee Global Enterprises have owned the club for 53 years—longer than any other ownership group in baseball—and the team is worth $8.5 billion, making it the most valuable franchise in the sport for 29 straight years.

Heads up: Recent movement in the coffers. On August 10, 2026 Apollo Sports Capital announced a $2.6 billion injection into Yankee Global Enterprises, the company that controls the club. The percentage it received was not made public and the Steinbrenner family retains control.

Who is Hal Steinbrenner

Hal Steinbrenner was born in 1969, the youngest son of George M. Steinbrenner III, known as ‘The Boss.’ The family fortune did not come from baseball. It came from Great Lakes shipping: the American Shipbuilding Company and Kinsman Marine Transit of Cleveland. Hal graduated from Williams College and earned a master’s degree in finance from the University of Florida. Before taking over the Yankees, he managed hotels in Florida. He lives in Tampa, not New York, and is known as the opposite of his father—quiet, detail-focused, allergic to microphones, and obsessed with financial balance.

His personal fortune is estimated at $1.7 billion, but that is tiny compared to the $8.5 billion value of the team he controls, because the assets are spread among siblings and partners. Hal is publicly skeptical of runaway spending and has said that matching the Dodgers would be ‘difficult for most owners.’ He often arrives at winter without a closed budget, something that infuriates the fan base of baseball’s richest team.

How they bought the team

George M. Steinbrenner III bought the Yankees from CBS Inc. in 1973 for $10 million. Remarkably, George put only $168,000 of his own money into the deal—less than 2 percent of the group’s investment—and ended up with 57 percent of the team. It is probably the best sports deal in history: $168,000 converted into a franchise now worth $8.5 billion.

George died on July 13, 2010, in a year when the federal estate tax was repealed in the United States. According to Forbes, the timing saved his heirs approximately $600 million in taxes. Fans call it ‘the last great move of The Boss.’

What else they own

Yankee Global Enterprises controls the YES Network (Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network), Yankee Stadium, a 20 percent stake in New York City FC (MLS), a 10 percent stake in AC Milan (purchased in 2022 with RedBird Capital), and interests in Legends Hospitality and other sports properties. The family also maintains interests in horse racing (Kinsman Stable) and hotel businesses in Florida.

In August 2026, Hal closed a $2.6 billion investment deal with Apollo Sports Capital, the largest Apollo investment in sports to date. The exact percentage Apollo received was not disclosed, though MLB rules cap private equity funds at 15 percent ownership. Hal explained the move in characteristic understatement: ‘we continually seek ways to strengthen our positioning.’ The capital was primarily used to refinance or retire debt at Yankee Global and fund new business opportunities.

Where the games air

Yankees games air on YES Network, where Yankee Global Enterprises holds approximately 46 percent ownership as of April 2026. Amazon owns 15 percent, Blackstone 13 percent, RedBird Capital 13 percent, and Mubadala 13 percent. Sinclair, which entered with 20 percent in 2019, is no longer in the ownership structure. YES remains a healthy, profitable regional sports network outside the collapse that hit Diamond Sports and FanDuel. Games have been available direct-to-consumer via streaming since March 2023 and operate within the Gotham Sports App alongside MSG Network since August 2024. MLB did not take over production of Yankees broadcasts.

Facts worth knowing

  • George Steinbrenner put only $168,000 of his own money into the 1973 purchase—less than 2% of the group—and ended up with 57% of the team. It is probably the best deal in sports history: $168,000 converted into an $8.5 billion franchise.
  • George died on July 13, 2010, the exact year the federal estate tax was repealed in the U.S. According to Forbes, the timing saved his heirs around $600 million in taxes. Fans call it ‘The Boss’s last great move.’
  • George was suspended TWICE for life (and reinstated twice): in 1974 for illegal contributions to Nixon’s campaign, and in 1990 for paying $40,000 to gambler Howard Spira to dig up dirt on his own player, Dave Winfield, whom he called ‘Mr. May.’
  • In August 2026 Hal closed a $2.6 billion deal with Apollo Sports Capital—Apollo’s largest investment in sports to date—mainly to refinance or retire debt from Yankee Global and buy ammunition for new ventures. Hal explained it in his own way: ‘we continually seek ways to strengthen our positioning.’
  • Hal is publicly skeptical of runaway spending. He has said that matching the Dodgers would be ‘difficult for most owners’ and arrives at winters without a closed budget, something that infuriates the fan base of baseball’s richest team.
  • The generational contrast is the best curiosity: George fired managers for sport (he hired and fired Billy Martin five times). Hal, in 18 years, has been almost the opposite and has kept Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman despite championship droughts.

Where they stand among the 30 owners

List Rank
By franchise value #1 de 30
By purchase price #27 de 27
By owner’s net worth #19 de 21
By years in charge #1 de 30

Amounts are nominal and not adjusted for inflation: comparing a decades-old purchase price with today’s valuation overstates the real gain.

The Steinbrenner family stands alone among the 30 owners: they have held their franchise longer than anyone else, built it into the most valuable team in baseball, and done so on a foundation of shipping money, not baseball money. Hal’s tenure has been defined by operational discipline and long-term thinking—the opposite of his father’s volcanic style. The $2.6 billion Apollo investment in August 2026 signals that even at $8.5 billion in valuation and $710 million in 2025 revenue, the Steinbrenners are still looking to grow.
