Austin Wells Admits He Should Have Stayed at Second After Ignoring Stop Sign Cost Yankees Game 1

Austin Wells broke up Drew Rasmussen‘s no-hitter with a line-drive double down the right-field line in the eighth inning — and then, on the very same play, became the out that ended the inning and sealed New York’s fate. Wells ignored third-base coach Luis Rojas’s stop sign, tried to stretch the hit into a triple, and was cut down by a clean relay from Victor Mesa Jr. to Taylor Walls to Junior Caminero. The Yankees lost ALDS Game 1 at Tropicana Field, 1-0, with that double standing as their only hit of the night.

What Wells Said After the Game

To his credit, Wells didn’t hide behind excuses in the postgame press conference. He said he misjudged the ball off the wall, thought it would kick out harder than it did, and with two outs and the Yankees trailing 1-0, he wanted to be aggressive in a game that had offered almost nothing offensively.

«Thought it kicked off more than it did. He made a good play on the ball. Two outs there, trying to make something happen, be aggressive with not much going on in the game. Obviously, love to be safe there or standing on second base.» — Austin Wells, to SNY Yankees, October 3, 2026.

The logic makes sense in a vacuum: two outs, your team hitless, the opposing pitcher dealing. The problem is that Rojas had both arms up before Wells even rounded second. The stop sign was unambiguous. Wells ran through it anyway.

The Relay That Shut the Yankees Down

The play unfolded in seconds. Wells’s double went to right field, where Victor Mesa Jr. fielded it cleanly and fired to shortstop Taylor Walls, who relayed to third baseman Junior Caminero right on time. No bobbles, no hesitation — a perfect chain.

The weight of that out is hard to overstate. That double was the only hit the Yankees managed all game. Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had reached base on walks, but no other New York hitter put a clean swing on Rasmussen across nine innings. Wells had the only baserunner with a real shot at scoring, in the only real moment of danger, and turned it into the third out of the eighth.

In 447 postseason games in Yankees history, New York had never gone six consecutive innings without a hit. On this night they went seven full before Wells connected — and when they finally did, the runner threw himself out.

Rasmussen’s Night: Numbers That Sting If You Root for New York

Drew Rasmussen finished with 7⅔ innings pitched, 1 hit, 2 walks, and 10 strikeouts — tying the Rays‘ postseason record for strikeouts in a game. He threw 101 pitches, 69 for strikes.

  • 2026 regular season: 16-5, 2.67 ERA, 0.91 WHIP (best in the American League)
  • vs. Yankees in 2026 regular season: 5-2, 1.81 ERA, 0.86 WHIP in 10 starts

This was the playoff version of all of that.

For the Yankees, who swept the Red Sox 18-2 across two Wild Card games, the offensive shutdown was jarring. They had 26 hits in those two games. Against Rasmussen, they had one — and the guy who got it ran himself into an out.

Austin Wells by the Numbers: What Statcast Says in 2026

Wells’s presence in the lineup isn’t random. Here’s what his 2026 Statcast profile looks like across 388 plate appearances:

  • 14 home runs, 32 RBI
  • AVG: .186 | OPS: .624
  • xwOBA: .300 — what his contact quality suggests he should be producing
  • Average exit velocity: 89.3 mph (50th percentile)
  • Barrel rate: 7.7% (48th percentile)
  • Hard-hit rate: 42.7% (62nd percentile)
  • Bat speed: 72.8 mph (56th percentile)
  • BB%: 87th percentile — genuine on-base skill
  • K%: 18th percentile (strikeout prone)
  • xBA: 3rd percentile | xSLG: 20th percentile
  • Sprint speed: 16th percentile

The profile is that of a catcher with real power potential and a good eye, but one whose bat-to-ball skills and foot speed don’t make aggressive baserunning a strength. Wednesday night was a painful reminder of exactly that.

Where the Series Stands

Tampa Bay leads the best-of-five ALDS 1-0. Game 2 is Monday, October 5, at 8 p.m. ET, also at Tropicana Field. If the Yankees want to even things up, they’re going to need more than one hit — and a catcher who stays put when the third-base coach tells him to stay put.
