St. Louis Agrees to $1.9M Deal with 15-Year-Old Cuban Third Baseman Christian Gonzalez

The St. Louis Cardinals have a pre-agreement in place with Christian Gonzalez, a third baseman from Matanzas, Cuba, for a $1.9 million bonus. Gonzalez is 15 years old, part of the 2028 international signing class, and is already represented by agent Chiqui Mejía. For a player who hasn’t turned 16 yet, that number says everything about how St. Louis views what it’s getting.

What the scouting report actually says

The pre-agreement was first reported by Wilber Sánchez (@wilberdata), who included a scouting note that jumped out immediately to anyone who follows the prospect market: «He has plus power that, at just 15 years old, would allow him to compete in a Home Run Derby.»

Scouts don’t use the word «plus» loosely. In prospect evaluation, it refers to a tool that projects above big-league average on the standard 20-to-80 scale — where 50 is average and «plus» means a 60 or better. In other words, St. Louis isn’t handing out $1.9 million for generic upside. They’re paying for an offensive impact profile that very few players show at that age.

Gonzalez plays third base, which makes the power tool even more meaningful. The hot corner is where bat damage matters most in the infield, and the game’s best third basemen have always combined exactly that: the ability to punish the baseball and hold down the corner. At 15, checking both boxes is what makes teams move fast — and spend big.

Why $1.9 million speaks for itself

The international prospect market has its own logic. Every MLB franchise operates with a bonus pool determined by its previous-season standing, and the largest individual bonuses within that pool are reserved for the players a club truly believes in. A pre-agreement worth $1.9 million for a 2028 class player — before the official signing window even opens — puts Christian Gonzalez among the most coveted names of his generation right now.

Cuba has consistently been one of the highest-yield markets for MLB talent. Players like José Abreu, Yordan Álvarez, and Luis Robert all arrived in organized baseball through different paths, but shared one thing: scouts who saw them early and organizations that bet heavy. The pipeline from Matanzas to the big leagues is long and well-documented. Gonzalez could be the next name added to that list — but first comes the years of development that no bonus can fast-track.

Agent Chiqui Mejía’s involvement matters here too. His experience in the Latin American prospect market suggests this negotiation was structured and deliberate, not a rushed deal.

St. Louis and the long game on Cuban talent

The Cardinals have built their organizational strength historically through the minor leagues, prioritizing development over splashy free-agent spending. A $1.9 million pre-agreement with a 15-year-old fits that philosophy exactly: invest early, develop patiently.

The 2028 international class is just beginning to take shape. The fact that St. Louis already has a pre-agreement locked up with one of its most talked-about names signals that the club’s scouting staff identified Gonzalez before most others did — and that early-mover advantage is part of what teams are paying for, separate from the talent itself.

Christian Gonzalez has years ahead of him before he sets foot on a big-league field. The 2028 class signs, at the earliest, in 2028, and the road from a development academy to the majors rarely takes fewer than four or five years. But almost every great baseball story starts the same way: a scout, a number, and a bonus that sounds like a lot of money for someone who hasn’t turned 16 yet.
