Daniel Johnson Jr. walked into Estadio Francisco Villa on August 9 as one outfielder among many on the Caliente de Durango roster. He walked out with three home runs, six RBI, and a tied playoff series. The 9-3 win over the Acereros de Monclova in the LMB Banorte 2026 First Playoff was, from start to finish, his show.
One Swing Changed Everything
Monclova had built a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning — a three-run burst that had the feel of a series-tilting moment. Johnson had other ideas. His first home run of the night tied it at 3-3 immediately, and Caliente never looked back, pulling away to win 9-3 while the bullpen locked the door the rest of the way.
A Night That’s Hard to Top
Elier Hernández added a home run of his own — a solo shot in the third — but the night belonged to Johnson from the first pitch to the last. His final line: 3-for-4, 3 home runs, 6 RBI, 3 runs scored. It’s hard to ask more from a hitter in a single playoff game at any level.
A Record the LMB Can’t Confirm — But Can’t Rule Out Either
Three home runs in one game is a rare feat anywhere in baseball. In the LMB, it may be unprecedented: the league itself stated it has no official record for the most home runs hit by a single player in one game, leaving open the possibility that Johnson’s performance is the best of its kind in circuit history — though without formal confirmation yet.
What is confirmed is how well Johnson fits in Durango. During his first stint with Caliente in 2025, he hit .429 with a .943 OPS and slugged five home runs in just 10 games before the San Francisco Giants recalled him. He’s back this season as a centerpiece of an offense that also features Hernández and Estevan Florial.
Where the Series Stands
Caliente finished the regular season 51-42, second in the North Zone. Monclova went 48-45. The series is now tied 1-1 in a best-of-five, and neither club is safe.
Game 3 goes Tuesday, August 11 at 7:45 p.m. at Estadio Kickapoo Lucky Eagle in Monclova. Spencer Turnbull takes the ball for Caliente; Jake McSteen gets the nod for Acereros. Caliente has the momentum — Monclova has the home crowd. The winner of this round advances to the Zone Series, with the Serie del Rey (scheduled September 9–17) ultimately on the line.
Johnson made sure the conversation stays centered on the Caliente. Now it’s on the pitching staffs to decide how long that lasts.
