The Tomateros de Culiacán have their first major foreign addition for the LMP 2026-27 season: right-hander Darius Vines, who spent the summer with the Tigres de Quintana Roo and finished with a 3.32 ERA, 69 strikeouts, and a 1.17 WHIP in 76 innings — ranking sixth among all LMB starters in ERA that year. The Tomateros open the winter season October 14, and they’re coming in hungry after a painful runner-up finish at the 2026 Caribbean Series, where they dropped a 12-11 extra-inning heartbreaker to the Charros de Jalisco.
What Vines Brings to the Rotation
Vines, 28, made 15 starts for Quintana Roo this summer and went 4-2. The surface numbers are solid, but the details are what sell the fit. He strung together 18 consecutive scoreless innings at one point — one of the cleanest stretches by any pitcher in the circuit all summer. His control profile is just as encouraging: 2.3 walks per nine innings and 8.2 strikeouts per nine. He’s not a pure swing-and-miss guy, but he’s not handing out free passes either.
For a rotation that needs length and wants to protect its bullpen from the second inning on, that profile is exactly the mold. Vines eats innings, limits damage, and doesn’t beat himself.
The MLB Context: What It Is and What It Isn’t
Culiacán’s announcement noted that Vines has experience in «the best baseball in the world,» and that’s accurate — he appeared with the Atlanta Braves in 2023 and 2024. Worth putting in perspective, though: at the big-league level he went 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA in limited action, and Atlanta released him in March 2026 before the regular season began.
His MLB debut was legitimately memorable. On August 30, 2023, he threw six innings of two-run ball at Coors Field to earn the win — becoming the first visiting pitcher in that ballpark’s history to debut with that line. The majors just never opened the door wider after that.
What 2026 showed is that Vines can be a genuine, reliable starter at a high level of professional ball — and that’s exactly what the Tomateros are buying into for the winter.
October 14 and the Countdown in Culiacán
The Tomateros didn’t reach this offseason with peace of mind. They were LMP 2025-26 runners-up and 2026 Caribbean Series runners-up, with that extra-inning loss to Jalisco still stinging. The pressure to build a real contender is very much real.
The season opens October 14 on the road against the Venados de Mazatlán. Vines is the first confirmed foreign piece for the rotation, and the club still has weeks to finish filling it out.
One thing is clear: the numbers he put up with Quintana Roo — 3.32 ERA, 69 strikeouts, 18 straight scoreless innings — are his floor coming into Culiacán, not his ceiling.
