30-30-30 at Age 24: Can Elly De La Cruz Break Juan Soto's Record and Sign for $1 Billion?

The man who saw Elly De La Cruz before the world did just said what a lot of people are thinking but few dare to say out loud: $1 billion. Cristian Batista — known as El Niche — runs an academy in Villa Mella and was one of De La Cruz’s coaches during his formative years in the Dominican Republic. On October 4, 2026, a clip of his comments from a Dominican radio or podcast interview was shared by @wilberdata on the same day Elly was closing out a 30-30-30 season with an .880 OPS and a 5.63 WAR at just 24 years old.

What El Niche Said — and Why It Matters Who’s Saying It

Batista isn’t a TV analyst or an agent. He’s the coach who worked with De La Cruz on the same Villa Mella grounds where Juan Soto also trained. When someone with that kind of inside knowledge speaks, it carries a different weight than a cold statistical projection. His exact words, per the @wilberdata tweet:

  • «Elly is going to get a $1 billion contract. He has everything it takes to break the record and become the highest-paid player in history.»
  • «He hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. His tools are only going to keep developing.»

To be clear: this is the informed opinion of a credible developmental coach — not an agent estimate, not a team offer. But it’s also not the first time someone with real industry standing has put a massive number on the table. Joey Votto, on an NBC livestream on August 31, 2026, projected 12 years and $700 million for De La Cruz when he hits free agency in 2030. Jeff Passan of ESPN had already suggested bidding would start at $500 million. The current record belongs to Juan Soto — $765 million with the Mets, signed in December 2024. El Niche is betting Elly blows past it.

The Season That Makes This Hard to Dismiss

De La Cruz closed 2026 with a .283/.365/.515 line, 30 home runs, 30 doubles, and 30 stolen bases in 143 games — making him the fourth player in Cincinnati Reds history to reach 30-30 and the youngest to do it. His 5.63 WAR ranked him among the four most valuable shortstops in the league. He also took home the National League Player of the Month award for September.

The Statcast contact numbers are even more striking: an average exit velocity of 94.7 mph (100th percentile in all of MLB) and a barrel rate of 16.3% (98th percentile). The guy is not just fast — he’s hitting the ball as hard as anyone in the game.

The Contract Situation That Makes 2030 So Explosive

In the spring of 2025, Cincinnati offered De La Cruz an extension that would have been the largest in franchise history — media estimates ranged from $225M to $300M, though team president Nick Krall never confirmed the exact figure. Elly turned it down. His agent, Scott Boras, has made clear that signing with Cincinnati before free agency is unlikely. In August 2026, the Boston Red Sox tried to acquire him at the trade deadline; the Reds said no. He’s currently earning $800,000 in 2026 on a pre-arb deal. He enters arbitration in 2027, with projections around $7.9 million for that first year per Heavy.com. Free agency arrives no earlier than 2030.

The Numbers Behind the Hype

Here’s what Statcast recorded for De La Cruz across his 2026 season — 636 plate appearances worth of evidence:

  • AVG / OPS: .283 / .880
  • Home runs: 30 | RBI: 79
  • xwOBA: .376 (95th percentile)
  • Exit velocity: 94.7 mph (100th percentile)
  • Barrel rate: 16.3% (98th percentile)
  • Hard-hit rate: 53.7% (96th percentile)
  • Bat speed: 76.2 mph (92nd percentile)
  • Sprint speed: 78th percentile
  • Chase rate discipline: 79th percentile

What makes El Niche’s projection stand out isn’t just the number — it’s that it comes from someone who knew Elly De La Cruz before he knew where he was headed. And right now, the numbers are proving him right.
