Gasser Did What Only Don Larsen Had Done in 70 Years of World Series History

Robert Gasser didn’t throw a perfect game. He gave up a hit and a walk. But on Tuesday night, in Game 3 of the 2026 World Series, the Milwaukee Brewers left-hander did something that had only been done once before in World Series history: complete six or more innings while facing the absolute minimum number of batters. The only precedent was Don Larsen — October 8, 1956 — in the only perfect game in World Series history.

How You Reach the Minimum Without Being Perfect

The minimum number of batters in six innings is 18. Getting there without retiring every single hitter requires something specific: every baserunner must be erased before he scores — via double play, caught stealing, or any other out that wipes him off the bases.

That’s exactly what happened at Tropicana Field. Yandy Díaz lined a single on the very first at-bat of the game. Gasser stranded him and then retired the next 14 batters without issue. In the sixth, Victor Mesa Jr. drew a walk to open the inning for Tampa Bay — but the next batter grounded into a double play. Inning over. Eighteen batters faced in six innings: the exact minimum.

The distinction from Larsen’s precedent matters. Larsen retired all 27 Brooklyn Dodgers in order across nine complete innings on October 8, 1956 — no baserunners, 97 pitches, two hours and six minutes. What Gasser and Larsen share isn’t the magnitude of the feat, but the specific statistical entry: facing the exact minimum number of batters in a World Series start of six or more innings. They are a club of two, separated by 70 years.

A Regular-Season Pitcher, a Postseason Monster

To appreciate why this is surprising, you have to look at what Gasser was during the 2026 regular season. He finished 5-5 with a 3.87 ERA over 20 starts — a functional, solid, unspectacular arm. His Statcast percentiles placed him squarely in the middle of the pack: fastball velocity in the 23rd percentile, whiff rate in the 28th, chase rate in the 22nd. Not the kind of numbers that make you think October.

And yet in the 2026 postseason, Gasser has been a different pitcher entirely. Three starts — against the Padres in the NLDS, the Dodgers in the NLCS, the Rays in the World Series — and 15 innings pitched with just one run allowed. A 0.60 ERA in the postseason. Tuesday night was also the first time all postseason that a Milwaukee starter recorded an out in the sixth inning.

The Statcast number that explains the gap between his regular season and October: Gasser allows an average exit velocity of 86.5 mph, placing him in the 93rd percentile for soft contact allowed across the league. Hitters make contact — they just don’t hit it hard. In a postseason environment where every margin shrinks, that skill is worth more than it is in April.

Milwaukee One Win Away from Its First Championship

Context matters as much as the numbers. The Brewers won Game 3 by a score of 10-1, powered by an eight-run, two-out explosion in the fifth inning led by Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang. Milwaukee now leads the Series 3-0 and stands one win away from the franchise’s first World Series title.

The Rays are in nearly impossible territory. Of the 43 teams in postseason history to fall into an 0-3 hole in a best-of-seven series, only one has come back — the 2004 Red Sox against the Yankees in the ALCS. No team has ever recovered from 0-3 in the World Series.

If Milwaukee wins Game 4, they would also become the first team to sweep both the LCS and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds.

Don Larsen finished his career 81-91. Baseball has that strange quality: sometimes the most ordinary player has the most extraordinary night on the biggest stage. Gasser didn’t match the 1956 perfect game. But tonight his name sits next to Larsen’s in a register that, across 70 years of World Series baseball, belonged to only the two of them.
