A full inning has six outs: three per half. When the defense records three outs, the opponent’s turn at bat ends and the teams switch roles.
What an out is
An out is the elimination of a batter or runner. With three, the half-inning is over. It’s baseball’s currency: the game moves by outs, not time, and each team gets 27 outs on defense in a nine-inning game.
The most common ways to make an out
The three classics are the strikeout (three strikes on the batter), the flyout (catching a batted ball before it lands) and the groundout at first (touching the base with the ball before the runner arrives). Tags on runners between bases count too.
