James Gonzalez is a 26-year-old left-handed pitcher from David, Panama, grinding through Oakland’s minor league system one level at a time. His current stop: the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP), pitching for Cardenales de Lara and trying to build the consistency he needs to stick in Triple-A.

Background
Gonzalez grew up in the province of Chiriquí — a region with real baseball roots but far from the media spotlight. His path to pro ball followed the same blueprint as many Latin American prospects: academy work, discipline and eventually signing as an international free agent. Oakland brought him into the fold, and since 2024 he has logged innings at both Double-A and Triple-A.
Professional Career
His minor league track record is uneven but telling. In 2025 with the Double-A Midland RockHounds, Gonzalez had his best season to date: a 4.27 ERA across 78 innings with 83 strikeouts. That performance earned him a promotion to Triple-A in 2026.
The jump in competition exposed real weaknesses. With the Las Vegas Aviators, he posted a 5.53 ERA in 57 innings over 30 outings — a step back that showed he still needs to sharpen his command and find more consistency at the highest minor league level. He has since split time between Triple-A and Double-A while working through those adjustments.
Winter Ball
This winter, Gonzalez is with Cardenales de Lara in the LVBP. Through four appearances, he carries a 4.82 ERA in 18.2 innings with 14 strikeouts — no wins yet against one loss, but a meaningful step up from his previous winter stint. In the 2025–26 Dominican League with Estrellas Orientales, he was roughed up to the tune of a 10.64 ERA in 11 innings. The LVBP numbers, while not flashy, show relative improvement.
This winter campaign matters. A strong finish in Venezuela could put him back in position to compete for a Triple-A rotation spot in 2027. Oakland’s scouts and Lara’s fans will both be watching closely.
