Jhony Brito is a right-handed pitcher from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, who made his MLB debut on April 2, 2023 with the New York Yankees. His path through the minors and into the big leagues — and now through San Diego’s system — tells the story of a pitcher still carving out his place in professional baseball.

Quick Facts

  • Full name: Jhony Brito
  • Position: Pitcher
  • Current team: El Paso Chihuahuas (San Diego Padres affiliate)
  • Number: 54
  • Bats / Throws: Right / Right
  • Height / Weight: 6’2″ / 209 lbs
  • Born: February 17, 1998 (age 28)
  • Hometown: Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
  • MLB Debut: April 2, 2023

Background

Brito grew up in Puerto Plata, a country with one of the deepest baseball traditions in the world. Like many Dominican players before him, he worked his way through professional development academies with his sights set on the majors. April 2, 2023 made it official — Brito stepped onto an MLB mound for the first time as a New York Yankee, the payoff for years of grinding through the minor leagues. He arrived at 25 years old with a clear role: add depth to New York’s staff.

Professional Career

In his 2023 debut season with the Yankees, Brito logged 90.1 innings with a 4.28 ERA, going 9-7 while striking out 72 batters. The numbers weren’t spotless, but for a rookie making his way in the toughest league on the planet, the experience was worth its weight in gold.

His 2024 campaign came with a new address — the San Diego Padres — and a smaller workload, but his efficiency ticked up. In 43.2 innings, Brito posted a 4.12 ERA, a 1-2 record, and 29 strikeouts. The move to the NL West gave him a fresh environment to find consistency.

So far in 2026, the numbers are pointing in the right direction. In 5.1 innings with the Padres, Brito carries a 3.38 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP with 4 strikeouts. The sample is small, but that WHIP is a clear sign that his command has improved — and in pitching, command is everything.

Career Stats

  • 2026 – San Diego Padres: ERA 3.38 | 0-0 | 4 K | WHIP 0.94 | 5.1 IP
  • 2024 – San Diego Padres: ERA 4.12 | 1-2 | 29 K | WHIP 1.35 | 43.2 IP
  • 2023 – New York Yankees: ERA 4.28 | 9-7 | 72 K | WHIP 1.22 | 90.1 IP

Awards & Records

Brito hasn’t collected individual hardware like a Rookie of the Year award or an All-Star nod yet. At this stage of his career, the focus is on building a defined, reliable role in San Diego’s rotation or bullpen — and right now, the numbers matter more than the trophies.

Worth Noting

Brito is part of a long, proud line of Dominican pitchers who’ve chased their dreams all the way to the big leagues. At 28, he’s still hunting for that breakout moment where consistency locks him into a steady MLB role. He’s doing that work right now with the El Paso Chihuahuas, San Diego’s Triple-A affiliate.
