José Altuve and Nina married in 2006, five years before the Venezuelan shortstop debuted in Major League Baseball. They met as teenagers in Maracay, the city where they both grew up, and built their relationship while he chased a dream many scouts dismissed because of his height.

The story before stardom

When José Altuve and Nina decided to marry in 2006, he was a prospect standing just 5’6″, rejected by several teams that didn’t believe in his potential. Nina stood by him during those uncertain years, when professional baseball seemed like a distant dream. Maracay, the industrial city in Aragua state in Venezuela, was the backdrop of their love story, far from the spotlight and expectations.

By 2011, when Altuve debuted with the Houston Astros, they had already been married for five years. She had moved forward with her own career: she graduated as a bioanalyst in 2012 and worked as a purchasing specialist, building her professional independence while her husband made his way in the Major Leagues.

Nina, bioanalyst and purchasing specialist

While José Altuve became one of the American League’s best hitters, Nina developed her career in health and administration. Her training as a bioanalyst—a profession requiring precision, analysis, and responsibility—led her to work as a purchasing specialist, a role demanding management, negotiation, and decision-making. Her career ran parallel to his, not subordinate to it, reflecting a couple that built their professional lives independently.

Two decades together in baseball

José Altuve’s career in Houston was extraordinary. He won the American League MVP award in 2017, the year the Houston Astros won the World Series. Over more than a decade in the majors, he accumulated over 3,000 hits and solidified himself as one of the best hitters of his generation. All of this happened with Nina as his partner, mother of two daughters, balancing her own professional life.

The couple has maintained a low profile, away from the media spectacle surrounding elite baseball. Their story is one of two people who met as teenagers in a Venezuelan city, married without knowing if the dream would come true, and built a life together as he became a legend of the sport.
