They met in 2012 filming a baseball video game commercial, and married in November 2017 in Tuscany, Italy, just days after Justin Verlander won the World Series with the Houston Astros. Their story blends the randomness of a film set with one of sports’ greatest moments.
The Set Meeting
It all started in 2012 when Kate Upton, a model, actress, and entrepreneur, and Justin Verlander crossed paths on the set of a baseball video game commercial. By then, Verlander was already a star with the Houston Astros, boasting a Cy Young Award in 2011 and multiple All-Star selections. Upton, meanwhile, was building her own career in modeling and entertainment, with three covers of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (2012, 2013, and 2017).
The Ring at the Met Gala
Verlander proposed sometime between 2012 and 2016, the year Kate Upton revealed the engagement ring at the Met Gala. The moment kicked off the countdown to their wedding, which would take place in one of Europe’s most romantic settings.
The Tuscan Wedding and Sports Glory
In November 2017, the couple married in Tuscany, Italy. The timing felt almost scripted: just days earlier, Verlander had won the World Series with the Houston Astros, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the franchise’s first championship in history, a feat Verlander sealed with a memorable postseason run. The wedding arrived as the perfect finale to an extraordinary season for the pitcher.
Kate Upton: Model, Actress, and Entrepreneur
Beyond being Verlander’s wife, Kate Upton built her own professional path. Her three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers (2012, 2013, and 2017) positioned her as one of her generation’s most recognized models. She also ventured into acting and developed her own business projects, proving her career stood independently from her husband’s baseball success.
Building a Family
By 2017, when they married in Italy, the couple was ready to start a family. Over time, they had two children, building a life together that combined Verlander’s athletic achievements with Upton’s independent career trajectory.
