The Arizona Diamondbacks‘ clubhouse has had enough — and they’re saying so. According to Ken Rosenthal’s report in The Athletic, published August 27, 2026, multiple Diamondbacks players expressed frustration and exhaustion over how All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte handled his mid-August absence. He didn’t show up for a game at Fenway Park without warning, then was spotted at the Talking Stick Resort casino the night Arizona faced the Cincinnati Reds. With the D-backs sitting at 69-62 and two games out of an NL Wild Card spot, the internal drama couldn’t have come at a worse time.

How It Started: Knee Injury, Then a No-Show

The situation began around August 14, when Marte suffered a left knee injury during the series in Atlanta. Routine enough. The problem came days later when the team traveled to Boston and Marte simply didn’t appear at Fenway — no advance notice, no public explanation. Arizona placed him on the Restricted List, then transferred him to the 10-day injured list with a diagnosis of mild left knee inflammation.

Manager Torey Lovullo admitted he felt betrayed by the no-show, though he’s publicly maintained a patient stance. CEO Derrick Hall was more pointed, saying Marte has «explaining to do» and that the organization confronted him «sternly behind closed doors.»

The Casino Photo That Made Everything Worse

What escalated the situation was an image nobody asked for: Marte at the Talking Stick Resort casino — a couple of miles from the team’s facilities at Salt River Fields — on the same night Arizona was playing. Players on the injured list aren’t required by rule to be in the dugout, but the optics were something else entirely. According to Rosenthal’s sources, for several teammates it felt like «a slap in the face.»

What the Clubhouse Said

The Athletic published anonymous comments that paint a clear picture of the mood. One player put it bluntly: «Typical Ketel. Just leaving. It is what it is.» Another described the casino visit as «rubbing people’s noses in it.» That’s not the tone of a locker room that’s moved on.

But Rosenthal’s report also included context that many headlines glossed over. Marte lost his maternal grandmother in the spring of 2025 and is currently dealing with the loss of another close family member. A source close to the player indicated Marte acknowledges he was wrong not to show up. He did travel to the Dominican Republic, and GM Mike Hazen described a subsequent meeting with Marte as «productive.» The communication breakdown wasn’t with team leadership — it was with his teammates. And that conversation still hasn’t happened. Ryan Waldschmidt, for one, publicly expressed openness to hearing Marte out and wanting him back, a sign that the clubhouse frustration isn’t unanimous, even if it’s real.

Why Arizona Can’t Just Walk Away

Hazen explained to The Athletic why the organization continues to stand behind Marte despite everything. The answer is straightforward and written in ink: Marte is under contract for seven years and $116.5 million, earning $15 million in 2026, with a full no-trade clause as a 10-and-5 player. Arizona can’t move him even if they wanted to.

The Return and What’s at Stake

Lovullo announced on August 25 that the plan is to have Marte back for the home series against the Philadelphia Phillies starting August 31 — meaning this week. The Diamondbacks enter that stretch at 69-62, two games behind the San Diego Padres in the NL Wild Card race.

In 2026, Marte is slashing .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBI across 519 plate appearances — numbers below his All-Star 2024 peak of .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs, but his contact metrics tell a more nuanced story. His return isn’t a sentimental gesture. For a team two games out of a playoff spot, it’s a mathematical necessity.
