Maikel García never buried the hatchet with La Guaira’s front office. He’s saying so himself. On the Pura Bola podcast (Season VI, Ep. 01), the Royals third baseman made it plain: if he was going to put on a Tiburones uniform, it was for the fans who died in the June 24, 2026 earthquake — not as any kind of reconciliation with owner Wilmer Ruperti.
What the Viral Clip Left Out
A short clip spread across social media with García’s quote cut off mid-sentence. He went on Pura Bola specifically to finish the thought. In his own words, as shared by journalist Juan Pablo González on November 2, 2026:
«I was going to play for the people who died in La Guaira — they were Tiburones fans. If I ever played, it was going to be for that reason.»
That context changes everything. This wasn’t a peace offering to the organization. It was a gesture toward a region that lost thousands of neighbors in a matter of minutes. García also noted that after the clip circulated out of context, Ruperti publicly called him out — a fresh reminder that the tension between the two hasn’t gone anywhere.
The Numbers That Make This Mean Something
When García talks about «La Guaira fans,» he’s talking about people who watched him hit .348 over five seasons with the Sharks — 136 games, 174 hits, 77 RBI, and an OPS of .936 (slugging .480, OBP .456). He’s not a guy passing through; he’s the best third baseman this franchise has seen in years, and both the fans and the front office know it.
The June 24, 2026 earthquake — a 7.2 centered in Yaracuy followed by a 7.5 off the La Guaira coast — destroyed 80% of the state’s infrastructure and killed 6,438 people, according to the official report from Venezuelan parliament president Jorge Rodríguez. Many of those victims were exactly the fans García is talking about.
General manager Fernando Veracierto had already drawn a line in August: «Maikel belongs to Tiburones de La Guaira. He’s not on the market.» The organization’s stance never wavered. But the earthquake gave García’s potential return an entirely different weight.
Choque de Gigantes: What’s Confirmed and What Isn’t
In a late-October livestream, García confirmed he expects to play in the Choque de Gigantes on November 14–15 at loanDepot Park in Miami, where Tiburones face Navegantes del Magallanes — pending Kansas City Royals approval.
What is not on the table, and García was clear about this:
- A full LVBP winter season with La Guaira
- Any forgiveness extended to the organization
- A resolution to the conflict with Ruperti
The 2026 World Baseball Classic MVP said something far more specific — and far heavier: if he plays, he plays for the dead. That’s the part the clip cut. And that’s exactly why he went on Pura Bola to say it in full.
